UCPD took a suspect into custody for an alleged robbery that took place at the intersection of Gayley Avenue and Strathmore Drive on Monday.

The suspect allegedly approached the victim – a UCLA alumnus – near the bus stop and physically assaulted them around 12:40 p.m., according to a UCPD Clery Timely Warning crime alert. The suspect took their phone and wallet before fleeing southbound on foot, per the alert.

The alumnus recovered their belongings after bystanders approached them and prompted the suspect to flee, said Jeffrey Chobanian, the captain of the UCPD operations bureau, in an emailed statement. No weapons were seen, and the alumnus sustained minor abrasions to her arm and knee, Chobanian added.

The suspect was described as a woman with a thin build in their 20s or 30s and about 5 feet, 7 inches tall. The suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and green sweatpants, according to the alert.

A suspect was taken into custody and charged with robbery and is currently being held in Los Angeles County jail, Chobanian said.

Chobanian also said in the statement that community members should stay aware of their surroundings, follow their instincts and take immediate action if they feel they are in danger. He added that people should not hesitate to call 911 and should report all suspicious behavior to UCPD.
