A person stole merchandise near De Neve Plaza around 2 a.m. Friday.

A person, who was not affiliated with UCLA, agreed to meet with the suspect to sell him merchandise prior to the incident, according to a UCPD Clery Timely Warning crime alert. According to the alert, the suspect requested to try on the merchandise and the seller handed it to him. The suspect then left with the merchandise.

The suspect was arrested by UCPD on Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Locator website.

The total value of the stolen merchandise was around $900, said Jeffrey Chobanian, the acting captain of the UCPD administrative and operations bureau, in a written statement.

The seller, who was not injured, described the suspect as a slim man around six feet tall, between 25 and 30 years old. He was wearing a gray hooded sweater and gray shorts, according to the alert. 

The report also identified a black, “older model” Volvo sedan as a vehicle involved in the incident.

In compliance with federal law, UCPD releases Clery Timely Warnings when certain crimes are reported on or near the UCLA campus.

Chobanian said in the statement that community members should prioritize safety when selling items online and meeting potential buyers. People should select safe, public and well-lit areas for transactions, he said, adding in the statement that people should bring and inform someone when meeting with potential buyers.
