UCPD is searching for a suspect following an on-campus robbery early Thursday morning.
A person struck a UCLA student in the face while the victim rode their bicycle outside the Engineering VI building on Westwood Plaza around 12:12 a.m., according to a Clery Timely Warning crime alert. The victim realized their phone had been stolen after regaining consciousness and was then hospitalized, according to the alert.
Jeffrey Chobanian, the acting captain of UCPD’s administrative bureau, said in an emailed statement that the victim has since been released from the hospital.
In compliance with federal law, UCPD releases Clerly Timely Warnings when certain crimes are reported on or near the UCLA campus.
The suspect was reportedly a man around 5 feet, 6 inches tall. He was reported to have been wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants, according to the alert.
The robbery occurred around the same time as UCLA’s annual “Undie Run” – a tradition where thousands of students run in their underwear from the intersection of Strathmore Drive and Gayley Avenue to Dickson Plaza at midnight the Wednesday of finals week.
Five people struck a student in the face and took someone’s clothes in Dickson Plaza during last quarter’s Undie Run.

Chobanian said the robbery was not “directly related” to the Undie Run. However, previously advised students not to participate in the run in an emailed statement.
“Since the Undie Run is unauthorized, I recommend that students refrain from participating,” he said at the time. “If you choose to participate, travel with a group of people and do not invite friends who are not affiliated with UCLA.”
This case is currently under investigation. Anyone with information can call UCPD at 310-825-1491.
