USAC recap – Nov. 26

The Undergraduate Students Association Council held its final meeting of November virtually Nov. 26.
USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and usually take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can find the links for the meetings on the agenda posted on the USAC website or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.
Public comment:
- No public comments were made.
Funding:
- The council allocated $5,287.33 from the Contingency Programming Fund to 19 non-USAC entities and two USAC entities.
- The council allocated $3,501.80 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to three USAC entities and two non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $1,551 from the Student Wellness Commission Programming Fund to four non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $2,500 from the Arts Restoring Community Fund to one non-USAC entity.
Officer reports:
- President Adam Tfayli said his updates for the week were written. However, his officer report was not updated for the week.
- Internal Vice President Josh Garland said the next Campus Safety Alliance town hall will be held at the beginning of winter quarter, adding that the meeting will be a collaboration with Student Legal Services. He also said that nominations for his office’s True Bruin Raise Awards are open, adding that his office will host its Off-Campus Housing Fair on Jan. 30.
- External Vice President Javier Nuñez-Verdugo said their office is currently accepting applications to be part of UCLA’s delegation to the 2025 UC Students Association Students of Color Conference in Berkeley. They added that USAC is searching for applicants interested in hosting identity caucus sessions and said UCSA is seeking applicants for a vice chair position.

- General Representative Diego Emilio Bollo said in his written report that he attended a USAC Congressional Advisory Board meeting. Bollo added that he attended a teach-in hosted by Opportunity for All – a campaign advocating for the UC to permit the hiring of undocumented students – with Nuñez-Verdugo.

- General Representative Tommy Contreras was not in attendance and did not update his officer report for the week.
- General Representative Chris Ramsey said in his written report that he organized a meeting with Residential Life and UCLA Dining and held an event for his office’s Bruin Buddies program.
- Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said his office is working on funding a student position for enhancing academic equity, adding that he believes the initiative can be funded by a donation to his office. Espino also said his staff is collaborating with the Center for Accessible Education.
- Campus Events Commissioner Robbie Hall said in his written report that he attended the Congressional Advisory Board meeting.
- Community Service Commissioner Carolyn Wang said her office is hosting a basic needs holiday drive and is accepting clean and lightly used clothing at donation bins at the Student Activities Center, Bruin Fitness Center and John Wooden Center. The commission is also accepting monetary donations for the drive, she said.
- Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo said in their written report that their office’s “Made with Love” gallery will be open Thursday through Dec. 13. She added in her written report that her office is meeting with Bruin Parenting Scholars and students from the Students with Dependents program to host an art gallery winter quarter.
- Facilities Commissioner Alexandra Paul did not attend the meeting or update her written report for the week.
- Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said he met with ASUCLA Student Government Services staff to discuss his office’s Bruin Card discount initiative.
- Student Wellness Commissioner Chiara Frank said she attended an event with representatives from other universities regarding loneliness. She added that her office is working on fentanyl test strip and naloxone administration training for faculty members and will be hosting a town hall Tuesday.
- Transfer Student Representative Mona Tavassoli said in her written report that her office is holding a study habit workshop with Frank’s office Tuesday and is continuing to plan its transfer advocacy open house event.
- International Student Representative Syed Tamim Ahmad said in his written report that his office will hold its final event of the quarter Tuesday. He added in the report that he met with the Muslim Student Association to discuss halal food accessibility and met with the Economic Crisis Response Team to discuss a grocery gift card program for international and undocumented students.
Agenda items:
- The council approved changes to allocation guidelines for the USA/Board of Directors Programming Fund. Morrone said the changes included adding a separate deadline for student organizations and Student Organization Leadership & Engagement advisors. He added that the new deadline to apply for the fund for student organizations will be Jan. 9 and that the new deadline for SOLE advisors to apply will be Jan. 16. Under the new guidelines, decorations must have cultural significance or serve an educational purpose for an organization to receive funding for them, Morrone said.
- The council denied an office space allocation appeal by Bruin Dine. Megan Cai, the president of Bruin Dine and a Daily Bruin staffer, said the organization – which provides food to food-insecure UCLA students – was seeking storage space in Kerckhoff Hall. Tfayli, a member of the Office Space Allocations Committee, said OSAC cannot accommodate Bruin Dine’s needs with office space.
