President-elect Donald Trump appointed William McGinley – a UCLA alumnus – as his White House counsel.
McGinley, who graduated from UCLA with a history degree in 1992, has also held the role of White House Cabinet secretary in Trump’s first administration and general counsel to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. As White House counsel, McGinley will give legal advice to the President, serve as a middleman between Trump and the Department of Justice and guide Trump’s handling of judicial nominations, ethical issues and clemency.
“Bill is a smart and tenacious lawyer who will help me advance our America First agenda while fighting for election integrity and against the weaponization of law enforcement,” Trump said in a press release.
As an attorney, McGinley has represented politicians facing ethics investigations in the past, including former Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock, who resigned from Congress after using taxpayer money for lavish expenses.
He has also worked for Patton Boggs, where he counseled political candidates, political action committees, advocacy organizations and other political entities. There, he served as a partner with Don McGahn, Trump’s first White House counsel.
McGinley later became a partner at Jones Day, representing members of Congress, corporations and others facing investigations before the Office of Congressional Ethics and the House and Senate Ethics Committees. He is currently general counsel at the Vogel Group, a bipartisan firm that provides counsel in managing government risk.
White House counsel appointments do not require the approval of the United States Senate.
McGinley is the latest appointment to Trump’s Cabinet. Trump has already selected a number of Cabinet members – including Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his Secretary of State and Fox News’ Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense. Trump also announced Tuesday afternoon that businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new Department of Government Efficiency.
