USAC recap – Oct. 22

The Undergraduate Students Association Council held its fourth October meeting Oct. 22.

USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and usually take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can find the links for the meetings on the agenda posted on the USAC website or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.

Public comment:

  • Nilaya Kanuri, the internal vice president of the Indian Student Union and former USAC facilities commissioner, asked the council for assistance with ISU’s Garba event taking place Sunday. She added that the organization was unable to meet funding goals and requested funding from the council for the event.

Funding:

  • The council allocated $15,052.35 from the Capital Contingency Fund to 28 non-USAC entities and one USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $9,255.84 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to six non-USAC entities and one USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $1,335.20 from the Student Wellness Commission Programming Fund to three non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $700 from the Academic Success Referendum Fund for one non-USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $2,475 from the Academic Affairs Commission Travel Grant Mini Fund to seven non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $5,155.55 from The Green Initiative Fund to five non-USAC entities.

Appointments:

  • The council appointed Mafruha Esha, a second-year applied mathematics and biochemistry student, as its budget review director.
  • The council appointed Eman Almuti, a third-year psychobiology student, to the Congressional Advisory Board as its chair.
  • The council appointed Jasi Bermejo, a third-year human biology and society student, to the Campus Retention Committee.

Officer reports:

  • President Adam Tfayli said in his written report that he hosted a drop-in session with the chaplain of the Muslim Student Association to discuss hosting an upcoming event panel with the board. He added that he attended his office’s United in Democracy event. Tfayli also met with Associate Vice Chancellors Rick Braziel and Mick Deluca with External Vice President Javier Nuñez-Verdugo, he said, adding that he will be the official student representative to the LA Olympic Village Planning Committee.
  • Internal Vice President Josh Garland said the Campus Safety Alliance hosted its first meeting of the quarter. Garland said his office will hold an event in the UCLA MakerSpace on Oct. 25 free for students.
  • Nuñez-Verdugo said in their written report that they attended SWC’s Healthcoming event and the opening night of the Cultural Affairs Commission’s Pilipinx/Latinx Art Gallery.
  • General Representative Diego Emilio Bollo said in his written report that he met with representatives from the Undocumented Student Program and UC Immigrant Legal Services Center.
  • General Representative Tommy Contreras said in his written report that he attended the Campus Safety Alliance town hall Oct. 18.
  • General Representative Chris Ramsey said in his written report that he met with the meal access and executive advocacy directors of Swipe Out Hunger to discuss the organization’s goals.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said his office held a workshop with the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Robbie Hall said in his written report that his office had a retreat to San Diego and added that he met with his staff.
  • Community Service Commissioner Carolyn Wang said in her written report that she continued to meet with Good Clothes Good People regarding the Basic Needs Redistribution Center’s eviction from the Student Activities Center. She added that she met with the Center for Community Engagement.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Alicia Verdugo said their office would hold its weekly “Word on Wednesday” event Oct. 23 and has confirmed its Noche de Cultura event for Nov. 25, as well as its Native Expressions event for Nov. 13.
  • Facilities Commissioner Alexandra Paul said her and Garland’s offices would hold their Learn to Ride event Oct. 25 and added that applications for office space in Kerckhoff Hall are open.
  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said in his written report that his office is enabling public access to view data of funding bodies on the USAC website.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Chiara Frank referred to her written report, saying she met with Student Government Accounting employees to discuss Financial Transparency Viewer.
  • Transfer Student Representative Mona Tavassoli said in her written report that the first meeting for the Transfer Leadership Coalition would be Tuesday.
  • International Student Representative Syed Tamim Ahmad said his office is collaborating with an international airline to secure reduced airfare for UCLA students to countries in Asia.

Agenda item:

  • The council approved an allocation of $5,000 from the Discretionary Fund to ISU for its Garba event. Tfayli said, however, that the event was an exception to general funding procedures and the money had only been allocated because of funding delays.
