UCLA Housing announced a new policy on Friday that makes meal swipes only accepted at ASUCLA locations during weekday lunch hours.

Starting this fall, meal swipes will no longer be accepted for breakfast, dinner or weekends at ASUCLA affiliated restaurants, according to an email to students living on campus from UCLA Housing. However, meal swipes can be used at Epic at Ackerman at any time, the statement added. In addition to the new policy, the email also announced the full reopening of Café 1919, a popular café that will now serve Italian salads, pizzas and sandwiches in addition to ice cream, along with the grand opening of Josie’s Acai Bar in Bruin Café, set for September 21.

This development is a result of our successful efforts to increase the number of dining staff in recent months, thus allowing us to increase our service levels on the Hill – a key priority since returning to campus following the pandemic,” the statement said.

Lunch hours fall from 11:00 a.m. to 3:59 p.m. for all UCLA dining halls and ASUCLA locations, according to the UCLA Dining website.

The new policy comes after UCLA Dining announced in April that the on-campus meal swipe value will decrease from $9 to $4.33. The adjustment to meal swipe value is under the authority of UCLA Housing and Dining. The $9 meal swipe value was put in place as an effort to alleviate pandemic-era capacity issues, said a UCLA Dining spokesperson.

UCLA Housing also said that in the fall they will increase breakfast and dinner options at residential restaurants and to-go locations. The university had previously reopened Bruin Café for breakfast in April 2024.

The dining changes are in an effort to serve quality and sustainable food, the statement said.

With the addition of expanded meal options, the opening of Josie’s Acai Bar, the return of Café 1919 and welcoming a host of new team members to our Bruin family, we are ready to start another incredible academic year,” the statement said.
