UCLA released a letter Tuesday to those inside the pro-Palestine encampment in Dickson Plaza saying their protest is “unlawful and violates university policy” and could result in suspension or expulsion. A separate BruinPost alert informed the campus that Royce Hall and Powell Library will be closed through Friday and Monday, respectively.

On signs delivered around the encampment, the message entitled “April 30 message for those in UCLA encampment” said students, staff and faculty participating in the encampment should identify themselves to security officers upon request. The statement said the university is asking participants to leave the area and that those who stay may face disciplinary measures.

“For students, those sanctions could include disciplinary measures such as interim suspension that, after proper due process through the student conduct process, could lead to dismissal,” the statement said. “Faculty disciplinary actions would be handled through (Academic) Senate judiciary committees and Academic Affairs and Personnel, and staff employee disciplinary actions would be handled through Human Resources.”

The statement said it is illegal for non-UCLA affiliated individuals to take part in the encampment, and doing so can result in a misdemeanor charge. The statement said these individuals should depart the campus immediately.

The statement also bans non-UCLA affiliated individuals from masking, camping or bringing large signs over 30-by-30 inches to campus. Counter-protesters of the demonstration in Dickson Plaza had previously set up a large video screen and sound system that remains in the area as of Tuesday, though the permit has expired.

The statement also cites California Penal Code 148(a)(1), which makes it unlawful to resist or obstruct peace officers or emergency medical staff with a potential fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment for up to a year.

The statement also said law enforcement officers are on the scene and prepared to make arrests. UCPD had previously responded to aggressive clashes Monday night and detained an individual Tuesday morning.

The statement ended by stating existing policies that allow for student demonstrations and encouraging students to use those methods to protest.

In a BruinPost alert sent Tuesday at 4:26 p.m., the university announced Royce Hall will be closed through Friday, and instructors will inform students regarding moved classes. Powell Library will also close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and will reopen Monday.
