Crimewatch: August and September 2023

UCPD recorded 1,176 unique entries in its Aug.1 to Sept. 30 daily crime log.

University police received 260 crime reports within the timeframe that resulted in active police cases.

Of the 260 crime reports resulting in cases, 118 were open cases and 142 were closed or inactive as of Sunday, according to a UCPD crime and fire log.

Theft and burglary was the most common category, with 128 reports resulting in cases, followed by 22 reports of drug and controlled substance in August and 13 reports of traffic and vehicular-related incidents in September, according to the log.

UCPD also recorded 919 events that did not result in active cases, with the following statuses as of Saturday.

Report taken: 132

Information only: 85

Non-criminal matter: 175

Warned or advised: 55

Canceled (by any party): 115

Victim not desirous of report: 34

Referred to outside agency: 61

Unable to locate: 51

Field interviewed: 10

Courtesy report: 12

Citation issued: 0

Unfounded: 5

Of the 436 incidents not resulting in cases in August, six were categorized as rape or other sex crimes. UCPD categorized two events as rape reports, three as sexual battery reports and one as an indecent exposure report.

Of the 483 incidents not resulting in cases in September, five were categorized as rape or other sex crimes. UCPD categorized one event as a rape report, one as a sexual battery report and three as indecent exposure reports.

Data for this story was obtained as a public record under the Jeanne Clery Act, which requires universities to report campus crime data.
