Two new apartment buildings are being created in the Westwood area to further support housing for UCLA students.

One apartment complex located on the corner of Strathmore Drive and Landfair Avenue at 540 Landfair Ave. is wrapping up construction, according to Urbanize Los Angeles. The second building – named The Hive – is located at 535 Glenrock Ave. and began construction in July, according to Urbanize LA.

540 Landfair Ave.

The new Landfair Ave. apartment complex will contain one five- and one six-story building featuring 21 units total, rooftop decks and 160 parking spaces, according to Urbanize LA.

The development, which is being managed by The Westwood Management Group through 540 Landfair LLC, is replacing two smaller apartment buildings built in the 1950s. The new buildings feature many five- and six-bedroom apartments, allowing more students to live on the property than before, according to Urbanize LA.

According to Urbanize LA, Jamie B. Myers Architects is designing the property with a contemporary style. Renderings of the buildings show landscaping around the outside and a large courtyard between the two structures.

535 Glenrock Ave.

535 Glenrock Ave. will be six stories tall and feature 18 units with four- and five-bedroom layouts, according to Urbanize LA. The building will also feature a subterranean level for 10 parking spots.

According to Urbanize LA, the property is being developed by M&A Real Estate Partners, who secured permission for construction from the LA City Planning Commission in October.

Zoning rules originally did not permit a building larger than the previously demolished units to be created in the space, but the real estate firm pursued incentives to permit it, according to Urbanize LA. As a result, three of the apartments will be designated as affordable housing and available to low-income students, according to Urbanize LA.

Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects is designing The Hive, which will be covered in cedar slats and feature terrace decks, and will also have an amenity space on the rooftop, according to Urbanize LA.

UCLA has also expanded its own efforts to build student housing in Westwood, including a new plan to build up to 545 beds at 565 Gayley Ave.
