UCLA men’s basketball’s (5-1, 1-0 Pac-12) game against Long Beach State (1-2) has been postponed for the second time in just over two weeks. The decision was made “out of an abundance of caution based on COVID-19 protocol within the Long Beach State program,” according to UCLA Athletics.
Long Beach State subsequently announced a two-week pause of its men’s basketball program after a positive COVID-19 test.
There is no known timetable for the game to be rescheduled.
The game was originally intended to be the Bruins home opener Nov. 30 before the game was postponed then because of COVID-19 protocols within the Beach’s program with no makeup date set. The game was eventually rescheduled for Dec. 15, but now it has been called off again.
This is the second time the Bruins have had a cancellation or postponement this season, while UCLA women’s basketball and football have dealt with their shares of COVID-19 related issues this season. The women’s team has also seen two games postponed, and while the football team has played six games in six weeks, it hasn’t all gone according to the original schedule.
Crosstown rival USC has been dealing with coronavirus issues of its own in its men’s basketball program, forcing the Trojans to pause all activities and cancel their next three games, with at least one COVID-19 case within the team.
With this game postponed, UCLA’s next game will be against Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic in Cleveland on Saturday, before beginning its final slate of conference games with a matchup against Oregon on Dec. 23.
