With 43 seconds to go, coach Steve Alford put his right palm completely over his face, as if to shield himself from the jarring reality at hand. UCLA lost to Washington State 78-85.

Fourth-year art history student Canan Cem (left) and third-year history and art history student Audrey Min are the two first-year Andrew W. Mellon undergraduate curatorial fellows at LACMA. Cem and Min shadow curators in the costumes and textiles department and in Chinese and Korean art, respectively.

“The role of a curator is this invisible hand that (the viewer is) not really aware of, directing the way they see things,” Min said. “(Curators need) an awareness of the variety of people that make up a society and to not focus on general representation.”

UCLA’s squad features 12 underclassmen with redshirt junior middle blocker John Zappia being the team’s most experienced player. Only two players from the 2015 team graduated – Trent Kersten being the lone starter.

Louis Tse (left) and Luke Shaw (right), both doctorates in mechanical engineering, are working to create a student-run shelter at a church near campus by next fall.

The Bruin Shelter will cost about $25,000 annually to fund and a private donor will cover the costs for its first year, Tse said. He added he hopes UCLA can later contribute to the funding and operation costs through grants and alumni donations. UCLA spokesperson Rebecca Kendall said the university cannot comment on the Bruin Shelter until it becomes a registered student group.

In the final quarters, No. 15 UCLA women’s basketball (11-3, 3-0 Pac-12) used its offensive weapons to pull away from No. 11 Oregon State (10-3, 1-1), gaining its most dominant conference win of the 2015-16 season with a 71-51 upset victory.

“I do think last year … it was probably a little too much (pressure) for as young as we were with seven freshmen and nine new players, but I think we are paying the dividends now,” said coach Cori Close.

Members of the student group Bruin Republicans vote to select the presidential candidate they want to endorse in the upcoming elections.

Fourth-year human biology and society student Lauren Grabowski was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2015. Inspired by Ellen DeGeneres, Grabowski created a video, “Lauren dances like Ellen,” in which she imitates DeGeneres’ dance moves and documents her DeGeneres’-style haircut, to update friends and family of her health. While Grabowski did not expect the video to go viral, the video now has over 22,000 views.

Guzik, who graduated from UCLA with a degree in history 2015, has posted 20 to 30 satirical posters at a time around campus since his senior year that put a twist on advertisements for research studies, textbook sales and other UCLA activities. The aim, he said, is to invite people to engage with things that people might not see or consider on a typical day.

"It doesn’t seem revolutionary for me to say this but we are so absorbed in technology that we don’t stop to see the world around us. I think that is brought into stark contrast when there are things that are so ridiculous surrounding you that aren’t even on your radar. And so it is supposed to encourage people to look, to investigate, to not assume that they know what something is just because they looked at it."

Alumnus Nathan Guzik posts satirical posters of advertisements to encourage a re-examination of people’s surroundings.

Ethnomusicology professor Timothy Taylor's perception of music as work and discipline was shattered during a night of watching men in a Northern Ireland pub playing Irish flutes while laughing, drinking and enjoying themselves in the music. Now, Taylor plays the Irish flute for his personal fulfillment and said the sound of the flute reminds him of his time in Ireland.

No. 7 Arizona entered Pauley Pavilion on Thursday night as the considerable favorite to win the conference, with a 13-1 record and the nation’s No. 25 scoring defense. But on Thursday night, UCLA (10-6, 1-2 Pac-12) exposed some weaknesses in Arizona’s armor. From the opening tip, the Bruins had their way on the offensive end, making a once-vaunted defense look vulnerable. UCLA put up 87 points on 51.6 percent shooting in the game, making 11 of 22 3-pointers in the process.

Former Bruin and current NBA superstar Russell Westbrook, who helped spark the Bruins with a pregame speech in the locker room, led the Pauley Pavilion crowd in an 8-clap at halftime

“That’s something I’ve always loved – late game moments,” Alford said. “Even back in the day on the driveway, I’d have my mom count down from five and I’d shoot it at the buzzer. … I’d do it till I made it.” In a move that has become almost a crunch-time trademark for Alford, the guard dribbled to his right and drove inside the 3-point line before creating space, stepping back and unleashing a three. The fans at Pauley Pavilion rose to their feet and watched as the ball arced straight toward the basket and found the net just as time expired. He made it.
