Officials reopen areas surrounding Sproul Hall after water leak

May 30, 2013 5:00 p.m.

Water from a broken fire hydrant between Sproul Hall and Drake Stadium flooded the nearby area just after 3 p.m., forcing officials to close the surrounding roads and sidewalks for about half an hour, officials said.

A piece of equipment that landscapers were using to remove a tree hit the hydrant and caused water to shoot several stories into the air, said Steve Jurado, assistant fire marshal for the UCLA Fire Department.

Officials closed a portion of Charles E. Young Drive West because of the flooding and closed the sidewalk that runs between Covel Commons and Bruin Walk shortly after.

Officials stopped the water leakage and reopened both roads at around 3:45 p.m.
