UCLA defense struggles in first half of Holiday Bowl against Baylor

SAN DIEGO — UCLA’s defense reverted to its old ways, and the Bruins trail the Baylor Bears 35-10 at halftime of the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

The Bears gashed the Bruins’ defense for 342 total yards. Senior quarterback Nick Florence accounted for 196 of them.

On the other side of the ball, Baylor’s defense sacked redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley five times and held UCLA to just 26 rushing yards.

The Bruins’ lone touchdown of the first half came courtesy of a short field. After a completion from Florence to junior tight end Jordan Navjar, redshirt sophomore linebacker Eric Kendricks forced a fumble which was recovered by freshman safety Randall Goforth.

Two plays later, Hundley found redshirt senior receiver Joseph Fauria in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown, Fauria’s 12th of the season. Hundley also broke Cade McNown’s 14-year-old record for passing yards in a single season with 3,485.
