Decade in Review: Fashion

By Shelley Brown

Dec. 3, 2009 12:35 a.m.

Every decade has its own fashion trends and moments, and the last 10 years are no exception. The American blue jean lost weight to become skinnier than Kate Moss, while formerly frumpy designer Marc Jacobs became a toned and tan icon. Fashion became a reality TV phenomenon with Heidi Klum on “Project Runway” pronouncing designers “in or out.” The ’80s were revisited as leggings and Ray-Bans became totally awesome once again, and lavender blonde Lady Gaga became the new style Madonna. Not all moments were fabulous, from Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” to Bjork’s Academy Awards appearance as a bedraggled swan. However, Americans became more Euro chic with the introduction of European megastores like H&M and Topshop. Finally, politically charged trends such as Obama fashion and “ethical” fashion such as Tom’s Shoes paved the way for a more progressively stylish future.
