A candidate running for the academic affairs commissioner
position with the Student Power! slate dropped out of the race for
the Undergraduate Students Association Council.

Eric Barba submitted his paperwork for withdrawal to the
elections board on Tuesday, said Nathan Lam, elections board
chairman.

Barba said he withdrew from the race for personal reasons,
adding that though his situation has been difficult, his fellow
slate members have been very supportive of his decision.

Barba’s withdrawal leaves another office uncontested.
Uncontested offices now number five out of the 13 available.

It also leaves the Student Power! slate ““ formerly known
as Students First!, which has held council majority for more than
10 years ““ with five candidates in the running.

Jenny Wood, current general representative for USAC and the
presidential candidate with the Student Power! slate, said she does
not believe Barba’s withdrawal will negatively affect her
slate and that the slate’s remaining candidates are
qualified.

Though Barba’s name was removed, any other candidate who
drops out of the race at this point will remain on the ballot,
which was finalized and approved by the council Tuesday.
