In the final match of the Center of Effort Challenge first-place duel, Van Winkle and Whitmarsh took their USC counterparts to a three-set battle in which they walked away victorious after dropping the first set.
A year ago, then-sophomore Caroline Canales jumped 16 spots up the leaderboard to finish in the top 10.
This year, the now-junior climbed eight spots past opponents to secure a third-place finish.

Rainy weather looms over the Bruins’ Pacific Northwest trip.
No. 1 UCLA beach volleyball (19-4, 1-0 Pac-12) will travel to Alki Beach in Seattle to compete in the Pac-12 North Invitational from Friday to Saturday, where rainy conditions are predicted.
