It would probably be easier to make a list of the student government initiatives Tommy Contreras was not a part of last quarter.

From working to denormalize the presence of contracted security on campus to hosting a financial literacy night for student organizations, Contreras has proven himself to be an effective and passionate internal vice president.
Contreras’s campaign promises were undeniably ambitious, and for the most part, he has delivered. His commitment to his platform of diversity, equity and inclusion is especially impressive. He’s collaborated to host a Hispanic Serving Institution town hall, and has worked extensively on proposing a referendum that would broadly fund retention efforts across campus.
The other area in which Contreras undeniably shines is his transparency efforts. The IVP office boasts a “Finance” tab on its officer report that includes all of its expenditures from fall. Moreover, Contreras organizes his officer report by platform, making it easy to track the progress his office is making on each campaign promise.
Contreras did admit difficulties in one subplatform – getting the UCLA Campus Safety Alliance back to its former glory. However, he contends that his attention was elsewhere as he co-wrote an amicus brief that would later be cited in a federal judge’s decision against the Trump Administration’s efforts to freeze UCLA funds.
Amid national uncertainty, Contreras stands out as a committed advocate for student voices. The UCLA community should be excited for what the IVP office has in store.
