ARTS 

 

The Arts & Entertainment section provides in-depth coverage of the cultural landscape and arts scene within UCLA and the greater Los Angeles area. It has three beats: one that focuses on lifestyle, one that focuses on music and fine arts and one that focuses on theater, film and television. The Music | Fine Arts beat covers everything music and fine arts related on the UCLA campus and around LA, including the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, student bands, orchestras, choirs and music culture on campus. The Theatre | Film | Television beat covers film and television news on campus and in the surrounding LA area, including the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, student filmmakers, actors, screenwriters and directors. The Lifestyle beat covers lifestyle topics, including books, food, video games, fashion, social media and any other A&E topics not included under the other beats.

A Daily Bruin Arts & Entertainment intern will complete the following tasks: 

  • Writing feature stories for the section.
  • Attending bi-weekly section meetings.
  • Meeting one-on-one with the section beat editors and top editor.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Arts & Entertainment intern will learn the following: 

  • How to craft compelling reviews, interviews and feature pieces that thoughtfully engage with film, music, theater, visual arts and pop culture — all through a UCLA and student-centered lens.
  • Develop strong interpersonal and research skills through interviewing artists, performers and cultural figures, as well as cultivating connections with publicists, campus creatives and arts organizations.
  • Gain experience working within a fast-paced editorial team, participating in section meetings, responding to edits and contributing to the development of A&E content, including packages and projects that enhance its written stories. 

 

 

COPY 

 

The Daily Bruin’s Copy section serves as the readers’ advocate for the newspaper. We work with every section of the Bruin as the final eyes on all content, and we edit for accuracy, grammar, style and sensitivity. We have won awards for our headline portfolios on a state and national level, and we serve as the watchdogs for the Bruin!

A Daily Bruin Copy intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Complete rimming shifts where they will copy edit articles before one of Copy’s editors takes a final look, and receive feedback on their edits!
  • Draft headlines for stories they edit on rimming shift and receive guidance from the sections’ editors. 
  • Attend bi-weekly section meetings, where they will be able to meet other interns, Copy editors and crosstrainers, while learning more about the section!

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Copy intern will learn the following: 

  • Sharpening editing skills: Copy interns will be able to edit articles on their rimming shift and receive weekly feedback from their editors!
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Copy edits content from every section of the paper, so Copy interns will be able to strengthen communication skills both within Copy and throughout the vast landscape of the Bruin! 
  • Attention to detail: From placing commas to headline writing, Copy interns will be able to strengthen their attention to detail during their weekly rimming shifts, and will be a part of polishing the final product! 

 

 

DATA & GRAPHICS 

 

The Data and Graphics section creates informative and appealing visualizations that aim to break down complex datasets, university processes and other areas of interest into an easily digestible manner for the UCLA community. It works with Online to embed interactives into the main Daily Bruin website to display the statistics often discussed in News, Sports and Enterprise articles in an engaging way. 

 

Data and Graphics utilize the following applications in our work: VSCode, Chart Js and Adobe Illustrator. In the past, we have won awards for best visualizations. View the Data and Graphics section’s work here.

** Interns will apply directly to one of the two parts of the section**

 

A Daily Bruin Data intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Work on Data Journalism pieces in a team-based environment.
  • Contribute to creating interactives, web designs and short-term data stories.
  • Fulfill interactive requests from other content sections.

 

A Daily Bruin Graphics intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Learn how to visualize information in an explanatory and engaging way (textual, numerical, spatial, etc.)
  • Learn different Graphics software (Adobe CC, Figma, Tableau, etc.)
  • Understand the basics of reporting in the context of graphics journalism.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Data and Graphics intern will learn the following: 

  • Journalistic writing style.
  • Familiarity with mainstream tools used in data science and/or graphic design.
  • Teamwork, communication and patience!

 


 

DESIGN 

 

Design arranges the layout of stories and art for print issues of the Daily Bruin newspaper. Design the interactive features on dailybruin.com, PRIME magazine and Daily Bruin’s social media platforms. 

 

While a good eye for design is helpful, experience is not necessary. Through training, interns will gain a working understanding of Adobe InDesign and print design that can provide valuable experience for the world of print and graphic design, regardless of major. Interns will also learn Figma and how to create engaging designs for digital platforms. As a note, the Design department does not regularly contribute to web-based UI/UX.

A Daily Bruin Design intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Design a sample newspaper.
  • Design a sample magazine spread.
  • Design a sample Instagram post.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Design intern will learn the following: 

  • How to use Adobe InDesign to create a newspaper layout.
  • How to design a magazine spread.
  • Basic Figma principles.

 


 

ENTERPRISE 

 

The Daily Bruin’s Enterprise section utilizes investigative journalism to hold the UCLA administration accountable and bring light to underrepresented voices in the UCLA community. Enterprise works with News, Data and other sections to bring awareness to topics and occurrences that are unknown or consciously hidden from the general public. It seeks to encourage change in our community by bringing to light areas of improvement or corruption amongst those in power.

A Daily Bruin Enterprise intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Write a News story under the joint supervision of the News and Enterprise Editors.
  • Conduct an investigation with other investigative reporters to gather data on an assigned topic.
  • Become a part of the section community, meeting and collaborating with multiple members of the Daily Bruin.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Enterprise intern will learn the following: 

  • Learn to conduct investigative-style interviews, including interview techniques and preparation.
  • Learn the format of long-form journalism.
  • Develop journalistic writing skills via writing intensives.

 


 

ILLUSTRATIONS & CARTOONS 

 

ILLUSTRATIONS 

 

The Illustrations section draws illustrations, headers and animations to communicate the paper’s stories through a visual medium. It works with almost all of the Daily Bruin sections by taking requests for standard illustrations, print covers, headers, flatpages and animations. It also produces its original standalone illustrations. 

 

Illustrating for the Daily Bruin teaches one to think creatively and add their own touch on a project, while maintaining the original intent. Illustrations has won several California College Media Association Awards. Please view the Illustrations section’s standalones here.

A Daily Bruin Illustrations intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Attending section training and media training.
  • Take a request under the supervision of the Director and Supervisors.
  • Completing at least one illustration every two weeks, five in total for the entire quarter.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Illustrations intern will learn the following: 

  • Communication with writers and editors.
  • Collaboration by taking writers’ stories and intent and depicting them in a new perspective through visual medium.
  • Creative ideation by pushing visual expression for illustrations and avoiding typical representation of ideas.

 

CARTOONS 

 

The Cartoons section creates strong and unique cartoons that range in commentary and style.  Cartoons is a newly merged section with the Illustration section, and together, they work to create artworks and pieces for column sections as well as creating their own standalones. They utilize the following: Adobe suite, Procreate and various other physical mediums in their work! View the Cartoon section’s work here.

A Daily Bruin Cartoons intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

  • Creating and refining unique and strongly voiced editorial cartoons.
  • Collaborating with column section writers to develop aligned artwork.
  • Meeting deadlines and supporting fellow Cartoons and Illustrations interns.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Cartoons intern will learn the following: 

  • Adaptability, receptivity to feedback and constructive criticism, and time management.
  • Various artistic and technical skills like composition, color theory, storytelling, etc. 
  • Extended creativity and imagination.

 


 

NEWS 

 

The Daily Bruin’s News section is highly renowned. The News section has five beats: campus politics, features and student life, metro, national news and higher education, and science and health. The section produces a wide variety of coverage – including feature stories, investigations, political scoops, trial coverage and scientific reporting. News writers are responsible for pitching, sourcing and reporting on issues that are relevant to the UCLA community. We are dedicated to telling stories that matter, serving our readership and pursuing the truth. 

 

Recently, the News section earned first place in the Best Multi-Outlet Breaking News Coverage category at the Fall National College Media Convention for its reporting on the 2024 Palestine solidarity encampment. The Daily Bruin also won Best College Media Group of the Year at the convention. Daily Bruin reporting has been cited in the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, CNN and other professional outlets.

A Daily Bruin News intern will complete the following tasks: 

  • Attend three in-person training sessions, two of which will be led by UCLA Student Media and one of which will be led by the Daily Bruin’s News team.
  • Attend individual training sessions led by an assistant news editor.
  • Contribute at least three stories per quarter to the News section.
  • Uphold the Daily Bruin’s ethical standards, including declaring conflicts of interest, refraining from the use of artificial intelligence and avoiding plagiarism.
  • Be willing to take – and learn from – constructive feedback.
  • Communicate with editors and other staffers in a prompt and professional manner.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin News intern will learn the following: 

  • The steps of producing a news story, from pitching to publication.
  • Good news judgment about what is important.
  • Best practices for interviewing sources and building sourcing relationships.
  • Writing in Associated Press style.
  • The ability to follow a dynamic and ever-changing breaking news cycle.
  • Ethical guidelines to adhere to in journalism.
  • How to interact with colleagues in a professional environment.

 


 

ONLINE 

 

The Online section maintains the main Daily Bruin website, all internal tools that journalists use in the newsroom and any external flatpages.  It works with Design and other sections to create a seamless website experience. Online builds tools for other sections to optimize their workflows, typically via web applications. 

 

It has multiple beats, including main-site, internal tools and external sites. Main-site oversees the development and maintenance of Dailybruin.com. Internal tools builds tools for other Daily Bruin sections, mainly web applications. External sites works on flat pages connected to the main website. It utilizes the following applications in its work: Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Django and a multitude of other coding languages/frameworks (including, but not limited to, JavaScript, Python, Node.js, Typescript, etc.)

A Daily Bruin Online intern’s tasks will vary from beat to beat. All Online interns will be known as software engineering interns.

 

A Daily Bruin Internal Tools intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

  • Attending weekly meetings.
  • Building new components for web applications.
  • Revamping old web applications, whether that be the user interface or old, unusable code.
  • Working with other sections of the Daily Bruin to understand their needs.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Internal Tools intern will learn

  • Docker, Kubernetes, Django, DigitalOcean and a wide variety of other tools used in the industry.
  • React, Node.js, Typescript, Next.js, Python, and more.
  • How to build on a semi-agile team and correctly assess user needs.
  • Learn from mentors on best engineering practices.

 

A Daily Bruin Main Site intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

  • Attending weekly meetings.
  • Making changes to the design/layout of the main site.
  • Creating new projects for the main site.
  • Upgrading code, both front end and back end.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Main Site intern will learn the following:

  • Valuable, modern front-end skills with React and NodeJS.
  • How sites get deployed, including how servers, databases and the internet work.
  • How processes can scale with Kubernetes.
  • The workflow of a software engineer, from local testing to pushing to production.

 

A Daily Bruin External Sites intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

  • Attending weekly meetings.
  • Experimenting and developing new interactive effects for flatpages.
  • Implementing features for flatpages.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin External Sites intern will learn the following:

  • Proficiency in front-end development using React, HTML and CSS.
  • Hands-on experience with implementing responsive user interfaces/frontend.
  • Collaboration skills in a team-based environment using Git for version control.

 


 

OPINION 

 

The Daily Bruin’s Opinion section is responsible for sharing columnists’ opinions and those of others within the UCLA community. We work on argumentative writing, personal narrative writing and publish sourced pieces to draft informative columns that often include a call to action for our community.

A Daily Bruin Opinion intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Interviewing sources, scheduling interviews and recording transcripts.
  • Drafting argumentative pieces that include a call to action for readers.
  • Monitoring the mainstream news cycle for potential pitches.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Opinion intern will learn the following: 

  • How to write an engaging hook that pulls the reader in from the onset of a piece.
  • How to effectively convey an argument using a journalistic style of writing and in a condensed word count.
  • How to persuade, inform and deliver accurate information to readers who will resonate with your pieces.

 


 

OUTREACH 

 

The Outreach section is the bridge that connects the Daily Bruin to its alumni and readership through engaging with our community, recruiting talent and facilitating alumni relations with the Daily Bruin Alumni Network. 

 

It combines marketing, public relations and community outreach to educate the UCLA community and the greater Los Angeles area on student journalism and the Daily Bruin.  Outreach oversees the Daily Bruin’s recruitment seasons and its recruitment social media account (@joindailybruin), the Daily Bruin high school and community college program, press releases, etc.

A Daily Bruin Outreach intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Attend Outreach-specific training and weekly/biweekly meetings.
  • Pitch recruitment-related social media content and events.
  • Writing newsletters for alumni and prospective applicants.
  • Researching career and networking opportunities for Daily Bruin staff.
  • Updating contact lists for student organizations, academic institutions and departments. 
  • Presenting the “Daily Bruin Student Journalism Experience” to high schools and community colleges.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Outreach intern will learn the following: 

  • The basics of recruitment.
  • Journalism ethics.
  • How to build and strengthen relationships within the UCLA community.
  • How to build strong communication skills (public speaking, networking, etc.) and work within a team.
  • How to create content for social media platforms.
  • How to research institutions and career opportunities for Daily Bruin staff.
  • How to plan events involving the Daily Bruin staff and the UCLA community.
  • Strategic public relations analysis.

 


 

PHOTO 

 

The Photo section highlights events, organizations and people who are part of the UCLA community through visual journalism. It works with nearly all sections at the Bruin to provide the UCLA community with proper representation through visual media. 

 

It has multiple beats — News, Sports and Arts — specializing in unique respective coverage. Under the News beat, photographers will cover events impacting the UCLA and Westwood community from student features to campus-wide protests. The Sports beat involves coverage of sports events hosted by UCLA athletics. The Arts beat highlights student artists and concert photography on and off campus.

A Daily Bruin Photo intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Coverage of events impacting the UCLA community (protests, portraiture, concerts, sporting events, etc.)
  • Breaking/Emergency Coverage.
  • Proper handling and maintenance of photography equipment.
  • Production of standalone content, highlighting events or individuals relevant to the UCLA community.
  • Technical ingesting and organization of photos into the Daily Bruin Photo archive.
  • Completion of assignments requested by the Editors.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Photo intern will learn the following: 

  • Intricacies of Photojournalism.
  • Communication amongst editors and staff.
  • Experience with Photography equipment, not limited to flashes, mounts, and telephoto lenses.
  • Journalistic editing styles.
  • Journalistic writing skills.
  • Sports Photography.
  • Concert Photography.
  • Portraiture.
  • Traditional Photography.
  • News coverage as it pertains to breaking/emergency coverage.

 


 

PODCASTS

 

The Podcasts section is responsible for producing narrative and interview-based audio stories that highlight news, culture and community voices at UCLA and beyond. The section often works with the Video section and other editorial teams to provide the UCLA community with engaging and accessible audio journalism. Our section has multiple beats, including News, Arts & Culture and Sports podcasts. It utilizes multiple editing software platforms, such as Adobe Audition.

A Daily Bruin Podcasts intern will assist in completing the following tasks:

  • Researching and pitching podcast story ideas.
  • Recording, editing and mixing podcast episodes.
  • Coordinating with guests and scheduling interview recordings.
  • Fact-checking information and ensuring high editorial standards.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Podcasts intern will learn the following:

  • Audio editing and sound design.
  • Interviewing and narrative storytelling techniques.
  • How to collaborate with other multimedia teams to create cohesive content.

 


 

PRIME 

 

PRIME is the Daily Bruin’s dedicated narrative journalism section. The section is most known for its quarterly magazines, characterized by its art-infused designs that enhance the storytelling of PRIME reporters. While most of the section’s stories typically take the shape of long-form articles, it also dabbles in multimedia experimentation (e.g., graphic novels) that tie back to its central tenet of storytelling through narrative journalism. Each PRIME story typically takes a quarter to produce.

A Daily Bruin PRIME intern will assist in completing the following task: 

  • Learn how to craft an intriguing story from pitch to publication.
  • Report on topics relevant to the UCLA community through narrative inquiry.
  • Attend weekly in-person writer’s meetings to receive personalized feedback and support from editors throughout the quarter-long writing process.
  • Respond to PRIME edits in a timely manner with a few days’ turnaround.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin PRIME intern will learn the following: 

  • Develop a higher-level understanding of storytelling, which includes how to synthesize large quantities of information and identify common threads.
  • Strengthen critical thinking, news judgment and inquiry skills to uncover novel ideas and engage in meaningful discussion.
  • Train alongside either the News or Arts interns to gain additional experience with short-form content to complement their long-form pursuits.
  • Gain access to art-forward print and digital publishing opportunities, such as magazine and specialized newspaper spreads.

 


 

SOCIAL MEDIA 

 

Social Media creates a cohesive social media presence for the Daily Bruin, ensuring that Daily Bruin content reaches a broad online audience. It collaborates with other sections to inform and connect with the UCLA community. As a member of the Social Media section, one has the opportunity to create independent social media content, coordinate with sections of their choice on creative content opportunities to feature their work and learn how to summarize articles and other written pieces for quick promotion on sites like X and Facebook.

A Daily Bruin Social Media intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Proposing informative and relevant content for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Coordinate with fellow interns to create visual representations of written words.
  • Write short blurbs on specific pieces of content to be posted on Facebook and X.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Social Media intern will learn the following: 

  • Information condensation for social media posting.
  • Content creation and curation.
  • Data analytics for posting improvement.

 


 

SPORTS 

 

The Sports section covers all of UCLA’s Division I athletic programs and adapts to the collegiate athletics landscape. It works with Photo, Copy, Design and other sections to produce daily online stories and articles in print three times a week. Sports has multiple beats, including men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s soccer, football and every other varsity sport at UCLA. Each beat previews contests, writes recaps of games or tournaments, features or personal interest stories about UCLA athletes, and breaking news stories on incoming and outgoing transfers alongside postseason contests. 

 

Sports utilizes Notion, Camayak, etc. in its work. Outstanding writers may be selected for travel opportunities as they relate to the business needs of the organization. Sports has won first-place awards for Best Print Sports Section and third-place honors for Best Web Sports Section. View the Sport section’s work here

A Daily Bruin Sports intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Attending weekly Sports section meetings to enhance their writing and editing skills and build their UCLA sports knowledge.
  • Report for 1-2 beats, writing game previews, recaps of tournaments, scouting reports on big opponents, etc., for those teams.
  • Interviewing athletes and coaches for stories to learn more about the team and its personnel and develop relationships with the respective players. 

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Sports intern will learn the following: 

  • Writing the basics of a tournament preview or game wrap.
  • Working on a deadline to create a compelling and accurate story in a designated time frame.
  • How to handle interviews with highly ranked and regarded coaches and athletes.
  • Teamwork and how to contribute to the Sports section as a whole.

 


 

THE QUAD 

 

The Quad, the Daily Bruin’s explanatory journalism section, breaks down newsworthy stories happening on campus and in the greater Los Angeles community to make topics digestible for our readers. Its stories cover student life, resources for students, city- and country-wide news relevant to Bruins and everything in between. It incorporates comprehensive background information and context for all of the topics it covers. 

 

The Quad occasionally works with the News section to cover important events. The section utilizes the following applications in our work: Google Docs, Google Sheets and Camayak. View The Quad section’s work here

A Daily Bruin Quad intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Brainstorming pitches for relevant article topics.
  • Conducting journalistic interviews with experts and students, as well as doing in-depth research for pieces.
  • Drafting, writing and editing explanatory articles from start to finish. 

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Quad intern will learn the following: 

  • Strong skills in journalistic research and conducting interviews.
  • Writing well-researched and thorough pieces that follow AP style guidelines. 
  • Time management skills in meeting deadlines and collaborating closely with other writers.

 


 

VIDEO 

 

The Daily Bruin’s Video section films, edits and publishes news about UCLA’s campus and community, as well as about the greater Los Angeles community. View our section’s work uploaded to our YouTube here or on the Daily Bruin website here

A Daily Bruin Video intern will assist in completing the following tasks: 

  • Planning, filming and editing weekly videos reporting on news happening on UCLA’s campus and in the greater LA area.
  • Creating long-form standalone videos and short-form social media content.

 

Over the course of their internship, a Daily Bruin Video intern will learn the following: 

  • How to use advanced equipment to film events and interviews, record audio and edit footage into short and long form content.
  • Communication skills by contacting interviewees, formulating questions and conducting man-on-the-street interviews.
  • How to work with interns in Video and across the Daily Bruin to plan and produce content.
  • Optional: Reporting on-site and on-camera in an informative and engaging manner.
