The Daily Bruin covers breaking news relevant to the UCLA community as it happens. This page covers the Nov. 17 and 18 UC-wide strike led by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents nearly 40,000 patient care, service and skilled craft workers.
Alexandra Olivar, a third-year computer science student, said she noticed a decrease in dining services since the strikes began, adding that food trucks have returned to the Hill after being reduced at the start of the school year.
Olivar also said she has seen particularly long lines in front of the dining halls that remain open. She added that fellow students seem to acknowledge that the workers deserve fair wages, supporting the strikes for the most part.
“They’re willing to inconvenience themselves for a couple days to support that cause,” she said.
Devon Young, a second-year mathematics student, said she has noticed food options on the Hill have been more limited since the start of the strikes, causing uncertainty concerning what times the dining halls are open.
She said while she finds the strikes understandable, she is not sure whether they will inspire change. She added that she believes the students bear a greater impact from them than the administration does.
Young also said that she has not noticed much pushback from students – they are either indifferent or in favor of the staff.
Jacob Creer, who serves on the executive board and bargaining team for AFSCME, said AFSCME may be done striking for this week but will keep continuing until “their voices are heard.”
Creer, a clinical equipment specialist at UCLA, said he encourages people to support them at the UC Regents meeting tomorrow and Thursday.

The march coming from Pauley Pavilion in Bruin Plaza mostly dispersed, with around 20 marchers remaining as of 3:30 p.m.
In a speech outside Pauley Pavilion, a speaker said the marchers are going to “wrap this up and feel very proud.”
The group of students and union members outside Pauley Pavilion started marching to the Bruin bear chanting, “Whose university? Our university,” around 3:20 p.m.
It has been months since AFSCME Local 3299 last bargained with the UC, said Jacob Creer, a member of AFSCME Local 3299’s executive board and bargaining team. Creer added that the union submitted a counterproposal and the UC refused to respond.
“(The UC is) not respecting us, not responding to us, refusing to actually just come back to the table so we can hash everything out and get these members the contracts we deserve,” Creer said.
Students and AFSCME Local 3299 members continue to demonstrate outside the UC Regents meeting, chanting, “Up, up, up with the workers. Down, down, down with the regents.”
The student demonstrators at Pauley Pavilion hold signs reading “Defend Migrant Workers” and “Keep ICE Out,” as well as a large banner reading, “Students Fight Without Fear Against Trump’s Fascist Attacks” in red letters.

At 2:17 p.m., about 100 students, including those from Anakbayan and SLAP! at UCLA, joined AFSCME Local 3299 demonstrators to shout, “Who’s got the power? We’ve got the power. What kind of power? Union power.”
“Workers are important for the school and I might as well come out and support,” said Sohan Agarkar, a first-year computer science student.
