Two UCLA professors will be honored as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, in February. Patrick Harran, a biochemistry and chemistry professor, and Douglas Black, a microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics professor, were among 347 AAAS members who were selected in November to be fellows. An undergraduate student government office will host a viewing party for the Saturday football game between UCLA and Utah in Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The event will feature free food and various student group performances, including one from the UCLA Spirit Squad, which will perform during the game’s quarterly breaks, said Danny Siegel, an Undergraduate Students Association Council general representative. Afrikan Student Union members said they are disappointed the UCLA administration only addressed about half their demands to solve issues of racial inequality on campus. Chancellor Gene Block announced Friday UCLA administrators will hire an officer to increase outreach and recruitment of black students, and develop more robust anti-discrimination policies. The undergraduate student government will vote Nov. 17 to require council resolutions to pertain directly to student welfare issues. Undergraduate Students Association Council Facilities Commissioner Ian Cocroft said he proposed changes to the council’s constitutional bylaws to increase the efficiency of passing resolutions, or the council’s official stances on campus issues.
