Daily Bruin awarded 4 honors at 68th annual Southern California Journalism Awards

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – The Daily Bruin took home four awards at the 68th annual Southern California Journalism Awards ceremony Sunday evening.

The Los Angeles Press Club hosted the ceremony – held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel – which honored student media outlets and industry professionals. The ceremony’s individual honorees included Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa and ABC7’s Rob Fukuzaki.

Amanda Velasco, the 2026-27 news editor, is a recipient of the LA Press Club’s Tony Ross scholarship.

Caitlin Brockenbrow, a news staffer, won Best Personality Profile for her piece, “Liberation Left Untold.”

Aidan Sun, a 2024-25 and 2025-26 assistant photo editor, won second place for Sports Photo for his photo in “UCLA football upsets Penn State in first season win.”

Sam Mulick, the 2024-25 features and student life editor, won third place for Best News Writing for his piece, “Long commutes, short-staffed – ‘We want to live,’ union leaders demand from UC.”

Megan Vahdat, the 2025-26 and 2026-27 Podcast editor, won third place for Best Podcast Reporting for her piece, “Persian Perspectives Today: Journalist, author and activist Homa Sarshar.”

  • Winner – Best Personality Profile, Off Campus Personalities – Any Platform, Caitlin Brockenbrow, “Liberation Left Untold.”

  • Second place – Sports Photo, Single Image – Aidan Sun, “UCLA football upsets Penn State in first season win.”

  • Third place – Best News Writing, Campus Issues, Layoffs/Strikes/Protests – Print or Online, Sam Mulick, “Long commutes, short-staffed – ‘We want to live,’ union leaders demand from UC.”

  • Third place – Best Radio or Podcast Reporting – Megan Vahdat, “Persian Perspectives Today: Journalist, author and activist Homa Sarshar.”
