UCPD is investigating an aggravated assault that happened outside Royce Hall on Wednesday.

The suspect allegedly approached the victim on a bench outside of Royce Hall and punched them at 6:40 p.m., according to a UCPD Clery Timely Warning crime alert. The victim sustained injuries that required medical attention, the alert said.

The same suspect assaulted a separate person outside of Charles E. Young Research Library, which resulted in minor injuries, according to the alert. Jeffrey Chobanian, the acting captain of UCPD’s operations bureau, said in an emailed statement that a community member informed UCPD of the assault around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

The suspect was described as a bald man around 40 years old and 5 feet 8 inches tall, according to the alert. The suspect was wearing a black blazer jacket, black plants and black shoes and was carrying a green bag, per the alert.

UCPD has identified the suspect, according to the alert.

Chobanian said in the emailed statement that UCPD believes the incidents are connected, but that there is not an ongoing threat to the community.

In compliance with federal law, UCPD releases Clery Timely Warnings when certain crimes are reported on or near UCLA’s campus.

“We are taking these incidents seriously and are actively working to determine what happened,” Chobanian said in the emailed statement. “The investigation is ongoing, and we are pursuing several leads.”

The incident is still under investigation as of 10:06 a.m. Thursday, according to the alert. People with information can contact UCPD at (310) 825-1491.
