Hundreds of students attended Spring Into Wellness – the Student Wellness Commission’s Friday Bruin Health Week event – April 17.

The health week campaign includes events that aim to provide education and accessible resources supporting student health, according to the organization’s Instagram post.

SWC’s 12 committees and partner organizations provided a range of activities, including a petting zoo with chickens, ducks and goats, said Hannah Yip, the Student Wellness commissioner. The event also included a photobooth and a bouquet making booth, Yip added.

“We’re really trying to bring a little more of these events together so that students have a more streamlined way of finding out how they can take care of their wellness, all in one place, all in one calendar,” Yip said.

The theme of the event was rejuvenation and relaxation, Yip said. She added that the event was a culmination of all the committees’ hard work throughout Bruin Health Week.

Upon visiting 10 stations and earning their stamps, students could earn a free order of Smile Hotdog, a Los Angeles-based food truck serving Korean Street food.

Sanika Kharabe, a member of the Body Image Task Force, said the interactive elements of the booths stood out to her – particularly SWC’s CPR & First Aid station, where students could learn practical skills such as how to use an automated external defibrillator.

Kharabe, a first-year psychology student, added she enjoyed accessing SWC’s health resources, interacting with students and learning more about the campus community.

Ethan Zhang, a third-year computational biology student who works for SWC’s health research committee, said he introduced students to SWC’s research projects.

Zhang, the events director of the organization, added that SWC Search presents its research – which primarily centers on issues such as imposter syndrome, sexual health literacy and how their events perform – at the end-of-year Undergraduate Research Week.

“We’re a very low barrier to entry kind of club,” he said. “We just want everybody to get a taste of student health related research.”

Sophia Chiu, a first-year psychobiology student who tabled for UCLA Total Wellness magazine, said they enjoyed learning more about the SWC committees and interacting with the goats at the petting zoo.

Caitlin Zhang, a first-year physiological science student, said she had fun racing her friends on the inflatable obstacle course.

“It’s been a busy year,” Yip said. “People have been up to so much, and so our goal is to bring a little bit of joy into the middle of the quarter as we’re ending off the year.”
