Everything is coming up seniors.

Eighty-four percent of the Bruins’ goals over the weekend were scored by their graduating class en route to two wins.

“It’s emotional. Honestly, it’s a class that changed our program,” said interim co-head coach Jason Falitz. “It’s a class that was the first one to break through in 15 years in 2024 when we went undefeated. And it’s like I tell them in every meeting, it is crazy, how fast the time goes.”

No. 3 UCLA women’s water polo (18-2, 4-1 MPSF) beat No. 5 Arizona State (23-5, 1-4) by a score of 10-7 on Saturday and No. 7 Loyola Marymount (21-3, 6-0 GCC) by a score of 9-5 on Sunday during Senior Weekend at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins honored 11 seniors at their last home game of the season.

Falitz said he altered his team’s typical rotations for its final home game to run his first two lines with seniors. He also slotted senior goaltender Izzy Rosensitto late in the game.

The teams broke even in the second and fourth quarters Saturday, but the Bruins eked out their winning advantage in the first – starting the game with a 3-1 scoring run – and third quarters.

The Sun Devils’ displayed their lowest offensive production this season, with just seven goals.

“It says a lot about who we want to be on defense,” Falitz said. “For us, we’ve got to take a hard look in the mirror and see who we want to be on the other end of the pool, because we’re creating a ton of opportunities with wide open players, and they have to be willing to believe in themselves, quite honestly.”

The Sun Devils’ next lowest goal total of eight also came against the Bruins on Jan. 31, while other top-4 foes have allowed more tallies from the No. 5 squad.

Sunday’s matchup saw UCLA jump to a 8-2 lead over LMU by the end of the third quarter, after a slow start with a 3-2 first quarter.

“The first half, I don’t really know exactly what happened. I think maybe emotions are high, it’s Senior Day, maybe there’s a little pressure there,” said redshirt senior attacker Emma Lineback. “We settled in, took a breath. Everyone just remembered the training that they do in practice.”

Lineback recorded a hat trick Saturday, following up the feat with a goal where she pounced on a loose goalie rebound to push the ball into the net against the Lions on Sunday.

After LMU scored two goals in the first quarter, it didn’t score again until the fourth, with two of its three goals coming off breakaway chances.

“We allowed them to sneak out a couple times,” Falitz said. “Whether we’re playing a fastball, we don’t hit the goal, etc., those unexpected moments will cause counter attacks every time. But we were able to reset, and we didn’t allow another one the rest of the game, which was good.”

Before allowing the two opportunities, the Bruins were on track to limit LMU to its lowest scoring outing of the season as well.

Following their last home games of the season, senior attacker Taylor Smith – who scored five goals throughout the weekend – said the Bruins still have more they want to improve upon.

“There’s all a lot of moments that we would all want to go back and fix if we could, but we just have to learn from them,” Smith said. “We saw a lot of zone defense, a lot of different defenses that we haven’t seen a lot this season just from these two teams. So I think that’s good, especially going into some important games coming up in our future.”

The schedule will only heat up for UCLA, with newly ranked No. 1 USC up next weekend before postseason play kicks off with the MPSF tournament. In the Trojans’ home territory, the Bruins will have an opportunity to take home the regular season conference title.
