No. 5 UCLA gymnastics (13-2, 9-0 Big Ten) will face old Pac-12 foe No. 10 Stanford (7-3, 5-0 ACC) on Saturday in a clash of postseason contenders in Stanford, California. The Bruins are coming off a victory at the Big Four quad in which they clinched the Big Ten regular-season title. But the Cardinal had a historic week of their own, breaking the 198.000 barrier for the first time since 2004 and second time in program history. Daily Bruin contributor Sofia Celis analyzes the Cardinal roster ahead of the matchup.

Stanford

Ranking: 10th

Strength: Floor

Weakness: Vault

X-Factor: Anna Roberts

The Cardinal are on a hot streak.

Last Friday, No. 10 Stanford snagged a victory over No. 25 Oregon State, breaking 198.000 for the first time in program history since 2004 and securing the victory by almost a full point.

And while the squad boasts a No. 17 ranking on vault, their No. 6 and No. 7 ranks on floor and bars, respectively, boosts the Cardinal.

Senior Anna Roberts is the only Cardinal to reach perfection on vault, sticking her Yurchenko 1.5 cold Friday and earning a career-high 10.000. Senior Taralyn Nguyen, who has a NQS of 9.850, followed Roberts closely with a 9.9500 mark.

Roberts entered this season filling the shoes of alumnus Brenna Neault. Neault boasted an all-around presence, with career highs of 9.950 on bars and beam.

Roberts is the squad’s top all-arounder with a 39.565 NQS – good for No. 5 in the nation. Freshman Ana Bărbosu and redshirt freshman Levi Jung-Ruivivar have also competed all-around, with averages of 39.317 and 39.075, respectively.

And Bărbosu’s floor prowess has earned international recognition.

Bărbosu and senior Jordan Chiles competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the individual floor competition, which resulted in an ongoing and recently remobilized court trial regarding the bronze medal between both athletes.

Bărbosu’s main challenge arises in beam inconsistency. Against No. 14 Clemson on Jan. 25, the freshman scored a 9.850 but earned a 9.400 the following week.

The Cardinal’s strength also lies in bars, with junior Sienna Robinson holding a season-high 9.950 and NQS of 9.895 – alongside Roberts’ 9.905 NQS – adding weight to the team’s season-high 49.600 score last Friday.

But the Cardinal has lacked consistency in both their vault and beam performances.

Stanford’s vault scores have oscillated from a season-low 48.775 to a season-high 49.600. Beam has shown a similar discrepancy, fluctuating between 48.975 and 49.575.

To defeat UCLA – ranked No. 7 in vault – the squad may need to show strong performances across all four apparatuses.
