USAC recap – Feb. 3

The Undergraduate Students Association Council passed a resolution calling upon UCLA administrators to review faculty with connections to Jeffrey Epstein at its Feb. 3 meeting.

USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Meetings take place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. and are open to all students. The meetings are held in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and are live streamed and published online. Students can access links for the meetings and agendas posted on the USAC website under the Documents tab or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on Youtube.

Public comment:

  • A representative from UCLA’s chapter of the California Public Interest Research Group – a student-led organization that advocates for the environment – said CALPIRG is recruiting 300 students to speak at a California Fish and Game Commission meeting about supporting the expansion of protected marine areas.

Funding:

  • The council allocated $45,879.66 from the Contingency Programming Fund to 71 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $5,581.83 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to two USAC entities and six non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $10,026.44 from the Bruin Advocacy Grant to two USAC entities and seven non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,799 from the Travel Grant Mini Fund to four non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,498.48 from the Academic Success Referendum to four non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $23,181.92 from the The Green Initiative Fund to seven non-USAC entities.

Officer reports:

  • President Diego Bollo said in his written report that more than 50 students attended his event with Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia on Feb. 4 at the James West Alumni Center.
  • Internal Vice President Tommy Contreras said his office hosted its Jan. 28 housing fair and a walkout condemning increased immigration enforcement activity in the United States the same day. He added that IVP rallied in solidarity with student protesters from the Los Angeles Unified School District, who held a Feb. 4 walkout in downtown Los Angeles.

  • External Vice President Sherry Zhou said her office is hosting a Basic Needs Farmers Market and Health Fair in Wilson Plaza on Feb. 10. She added that she is working with General Representative Brett Berndt’s office to collect data on housing conditions in Westwood.
  • General Representative Talia Davood said in her written report that her self-defense class with Kappa Kappa Gamma was held Saturday.
  • General Representative Jayha Buhs Jackson was not at the meeting and did not update her written report.
  • General Representative Brett Berndt was not at the meeting but said in his written report that his office is co-hosting a cover letter workshop with Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon’s office March 2. He said that his office is also working on finalizing a tenant rights workshop this quarter.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said in his written report that his office collaborated with the director of Fostering Connections to select and finalize candidates for the Fostering Connections Mentorship Pilot Program. The program will provide UCLA students with the opportunity to offer peer-to-peer mentorship to transitional-age youth who are not enrolled in college.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Daniel Leal was not at the meeting and did not update his written report.
  • Community Service Commissioner Edison Chua said in his written report that his office released a transparency report for fall quarter, which included information about total funding allocations and programming initiatives. He also said that his office is partnering with the UCLA Volunteer Center to hold a Non-Profit Networking Night tabling event in Carnesale Commons on Feb. 26. He added that the event will highlight nonprofit-related internship opportunities to undergraduate students.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Divine Trewick was not at the meeting but said in her written report that her office’s Art Series collaborated with the Jan. 29 candlelight vigil honoring the lives of people killed by federal agents in December and January – including U.S. citizens Keith Porter Jr., Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

  • Facilities Commissioner Joy Huang said in her written report that applications for Office Space Allocation – which include rentals for office spaces, lockers or mailboxes – are live for the 2026-28 school years with a Feb. 13 deadline. She added that Sustainagoals, a sustainability committee under the FAC, held their first monthly clothing swap of the year Jan. 30.
  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said in his written report that he met with the USAC webmaster to discuss uploading his financial transparency website to the USAC website.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Hannah Yip said in her written report that the SWC Programming Fund applications are currently open. She added that her office is hosting multiple events including a Period Making Care Packages event on Feb. 11. She is also hosting a Total Wellness Valentine’s Day event on Feb. 7 where students can build their own Lego succulents, as well as several Campus Assualt Resources and Education sexual violence prevention certificate training workshops Feb. 11 and 18.
  • Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon said in her written report that she made reservations at the Latinx Success Center and is looking for on-campus options with the Transfer Student Center to host events related to getting involved with USAC ahead of election season.
  • International Student Representative Keya Tanna did not update her written report.

Agenda items:

  • The council unanimously approved a resolution calling upon UCLA to review any financial, research or institutional relationships between UCLA faculty and Jeffrey Epstein. Mark Tramo, an associate adjunct professor of neurology, communicated with Epstein at least semi-regularly over email between 2010 and 2019, according to Justice Department documents released Jan. 30. One of Epstein’s charities also gave Tramo a $100,000 check, according to the files. The council also called upon the university to establish ethical guidelines that guide faculty correspondence, especially in cases in which donors might have a history of criminal misconduct.
