USAC recap – Jan. 27

The Undergraduate Students Association Council unanimously approved a letter condemning increased immigration enforcement activity at its Jan. 27 meeting.

USAC is the official undergraduate student government at UCLA. Meetings are hosted every Tuesdays in the Bruin Viewpoint Room and are live streamed and published online. Students can access meetings on the USAC Live! Youtube Channel and view the posted agenda under the Documents tab on the USAC website.

Public comment:

  • Rachel Doerfler, co-director of the Equity and Transparency Committee under the office of Internal Vice President Tommy Contreras, said the office is hosting a “Meet the Council Members” event to create discourse about the necessity of USAC’s work and the officers’ impact on student lives. Doerfler requested that council members attend the event Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Royce Hall 160.

Funding:

  • The council allocated $22,297.33 from the Contingency Programming Fund to three USAC entities and 46 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $12,283.33 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to seven USAC entities and seven non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,474.05 from the Student Wellness Commission Programming Fund to one USAC entity and one non-USAC entity.
  • The council allocated $892.40 from Academic Success Referendum Fund to two non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,312.48 from the Travel Grant Mini Fund to three non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $17,357.85 from The Green Initiative Fund to one USAC entity and four non-USAC entities.

Officer reports:

  • President Diego Bollo said the Los Angeles City Controller will be speaking to students Feb. 4 about the city budget and ways students can be engaged in government at the local level. He added in his written report that he attended the Students of Color Conference at UC Santa Barbara.
  • Internal Vice President Tommy Contreras said his office organized a student walkout in solidarity with ongoing ICE protests Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. He added that there was a candlelit vigil Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. in Dickson Court South to honor United States citizens Keith Porter Jr., Renée Good and Alex Pretti – who federal agents shot dead in the past two months. He said his office hosted the UCLA Off-Campus Living Fair on Jan. 28, which included resources for students seeking off-campus housing for the 2026-27 academic year.
  • External Vice President Sherry Zhou said applications for the Student Lobby Conference, which will be hosted March 6–9 in Sacramento, closed Friday. She added that no prior lobbying experience is necessary to participate. Zhou said in her written report that 47 students participated in the Students of Color Conference, which included workshops and discussions about issues impacting communities of color within the UC system. Her office is hosting a Basic Needs Farmers Market and Health Fair on Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Wilson Plaza, she added.
  • General Representative Talia Davood said Jan. 27 was Holocaust Remembrance Day. She added that her office is hosting a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance on Feb. 3 and applications to attend are available on her Instagram account. Davood said her office is co-hosting a self-defense class with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority Feb. 7. There will be a Mental Health Petting Zoo with Wazo Connect, a student organization focused on improving mental health on college campuses, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bruin Plaza, she added. Davood said there will be an interfaith lunch Feb. 13 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. as part of her Interfaith Council initiative.
  • General Representative Jayha Buhs Jackson was not present and did not update her written report.
  • General Representative Brett Berndt said the Campus Assault Resources and Education team – which provides confidential support for sexual assault survivors – is finalizing dates for an event to guide students in filing a police report after experiencing assault. He added that the team is meeting with student regent Sonya Brooks to discuss on-campus UCLA facilities providing drink spiking tests, as students are currently forced to go to off-campus locations like the Santa Monica Treatment Center for tests. He said his office is planning a workshop for transfer students interested in research and graduate school opportunities in partnership with Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon. Berndt added that he is planning to host a pre-law panel with the Pre-Law Transfer Society in early spring and that his office will start collecting clothing donations with Unravel at UCLA for mutual aid distribution at the end of the winter quarter. He said the Transportation/Accessibility Team will be canvassing with EVP and the Student Homes Coalition, a student group advocating for accessible and affordable housing, to collect Westwood housing data.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said in his written report that his office reconnected with the Housing office through an ambassador program and is discussing initiatives within the Academic Senate.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Daniel Leal said his office is presenting the third movie in its Oscar Series on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the James Bridges Theater. He added that Sasha Colby, winner of season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will be at Schoenberg Hall on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m for a moderated Q&A and performance.
  • Community Service Commissioner Edison Chua said in his written report that his office will continue to support the Community Service Transportation Fund for the winter and spring quarters. He added that his office will organize Youth Safety Training Workshops for registered campus organizations.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Divine Trewick said her office hosted its Art in Resistance Gallery on Jan. 28 in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery – which she said emphasized the importance of art as a form of protest. She added that Hip-Hop Congress, a UCLA arts and culture club, began preparing for Hip-Hop Appreciation Month with a kickoff event at Bruin Plaza on Jan. 29. Trewick said in her written report that CAC supports IVP’s anti-ICE protest and candlelight vigil. She added that her office had its first General Body Meeting of the quarter to catch up on CAC programming.
  • Facilities Commissioner Joy Huang said the LA Metro Board of Directors unanimously approved Modified Alternative Five as the Locally Preferred Alternative for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor, which includes an on-campus station. She added that 164 comments were submitted to Metro in support of STC.

  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said his office finalized funding guidelines for commuter parking permit scholarships.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Hannah Yip said her office is reviewing data from the Survey on Student Health Resources & Access to determine knowledge gaps about student health resources. She added that the Student Health Network is hosting an Art Therapy and Wellness event Feb. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in Ackerman 2412.
  • A representative from the Transfer Student Representative’s Office said the office hosted its Speak for Snack event on Bruin Walk, where students provided feedback for the TSR office and received free snacks. The representative added that there is a second-year transfer Zoom panel Q&A on Jan. 30 with applicants and admits from California Community College Connections. The office is hosting a webinar exploring research opportunities Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
  • International Student Representative Keya Tanna said the Dashew Center will host the World Cafe, an event celebrating international cuisine, Feb. 4. She added that the Student Legal Services educational event is Feb. 11 and there will be an International Alumni mixer on Feb. 13. Tanna said she is hoping to hold the Bruin Buddies event Feb. 6 to facilitate community engagement between international exchange students and UCLA students.

Agenda items:

  • The council unanimously approved a letter opposing the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement activity across the United States. Contreras said the letter called for the UC to establish itself as a sanctuary campus, which limits university cooperation with immigration enforcement and for the abolition of ICE.
