Pressure does not wait for the postseason.
It’s measured in points.
And pressure is built into the Bruin standard.
For coach John Hawks, the standard is not just simply winning – it is winning cleanly.
“I trust our guys 100% to go and perform when it matters,” Hawks said. “I’m not worried about the service errors. I’m worried about us scoring points and limiting the team at the net.”
No. 1 UCLA men’s volleyball (4-0, 1-0 MPSF) is set to play back-to-back matches this weekend, first at Pauley Pavilion against Fort Valley State (1-0) on Thursday night and then against No. 11 UC San Diego (3-2) on Friday night at LionTree Arena.
The Bruins currently hold a 3-0 all-time record against the Wildcats and a 28-5 tally against the Tritons.
The Wildcats’ lineup features outside hitter Isaiah Fedd, who notched 18 kills at a .406 clip across four sets against Queens University of Charlotte on Jan. 11. Alongside Fedd, setter/opposite hitter Logan Rogers has stepped in as a new addition for the Wildcats. The freshman made his collegiate debut against the Lions and tallied nine kills on a .278 clip.
Fort Valley State has added 11 new players to its 19-player roster. One of the new transfer additions is Keaton Long from Lewis University, who tallied seven kills on a .400 clip against Queens University of Charlotte.

The Tritons’ lineup features veteran outside hitters Sebastiano Sani and Leo Pravednikov, who have already tallied over 100 combined kills this season. The junior duo also led the Tritons in kills in their recent match against No. 8 BYU on Saturday, with Sani tallying 13 kills on a .231 clip and Pravednikov tallying 12 on a .259 clip.
Both squads are headlined by a slew of veterans and newcomers at the pin, and the Bruins’ ability to maintain control of the match’s tempo will likely be tested as they work with their own set of new and experienced players.
Sophomore outside hitter Sean Kelly credited senior setter Andrew Rowan with setting the team’s tone after UCLA’s victory against then-No. 6 Loyola Chicago on Sunday.
“Whenever we’re not feeling fully there, it’s easy to talk to him,” Kelly said. “He’s great at adjusting.”
And for redshirt junior opposite David Decker, the Bruins’ undefeated start has only planted the seeds for what is to come.
“I wouldn’t change anything from where we’re at,” Decker said. “I think we learned a lot about ourselves tonight – I think we showed a lot of grit, so I’m really proud of us.”
