USAC recap – Jan. 13

The Undergraduate Students Association Council allocated more than $40,000 in funding and approved a resolution in support of protests in Iran calling for regime change at its Jan. 13 meeting.

USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings are open to all students and usually take place in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and on Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Students can find the links for the meetings on the agenda posted on the USAC website or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.

Public comment:

  • There was no public comment at the meeting.

Funding:

  • The council allocated $10,321.29 from the Contingency Programming Fund to three USAC entities and 25 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $9,382.42 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to 11 non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,914.25 from the Student Wellness Programming Fund to four non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $1,500 from the Academic Success Referendum Fund to three non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $3,626.09 from the Travel Grant Mini Fund to eight non-USAC entities.
  • The council allocated $15,158.56 from The Green Initiative Fund to two non-USAC entities.

Special presentations:

  • The USA Judicial Board gave a presentation on its responsibilities and functions, which include reviewing student cases brought against USAC regarding infractions to the USA constitution, bylaws and election code.

Officer reports:

  • President Diego Bollo was not in attendance and did not update his written report for the week.
  • Internal Vice President Tommy Contreras said in his written report that his office will hold a fundraiser every Thursday of the quarter and will donate half the proceeds to a student organization. He added that his office is continuing to work on a referendum that would increase funding for student success and retention initiatives.
  • External Vice President Sherry Zhou said her office’s fellowship applications are open until Jan. 19. She added in her written report that her office is planning a Students of Color Conference, which will take place Jan 23. to Jan 25.
  • General Representative Talia Davood said in her written report that her office created a resolution expressing support for the protests in Iran calling for regime change, which began in late December amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis. Iran’s incumbent government has killed more than 2,000 people and has shut down internet access in the country, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.
  • General Representative Jayha Buhs Jackson said her office is holding its first South West Asian and North African Lobby Day meeting Jan. 16.
  • General Representative Brett Berndt said in his written report that his office is finalizing logistics for an event related to Senate Bill 79. The bill allows for denser housing developments near transit centers, including Westwood.

  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said in his written report that his office is promoting the Fostering Connections Mentorship Pilot Program, which will connect UCLA students with transitional-age youth who have not yet attended college.
  • Campus Events Commissioner Daniel Leal said his office has started an Oscar-winning movie screening event series.
  • Community Service Commissioner Edison Chua said his office is accepting applications for an impact conference in Ohio, which is fully funded and includes a series of workshops.
  • Facilities Commissioner Joy Huang said her office is holding an academic accessibility town hall in collaboration with Buhs Jackson, Berndt and Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon on Jan. 15.
  • Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone said in his written report that he will meet with the Commuter Supports & Programs Office and Commuter Liaison to discuss commuter parking grants.
  • Cultural Affairs Commissioner Divine Trewick said her office started a radio show called CACtivated that airs Sundays at 5 p.m.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Hannah Yip said BruiNecessities’ gift card applications are due Jan. 16.
  • Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon said her office is accepting applications for the Transfer Student Advocacy Day Steering Committee until Jan. 23.
  • International Student Representative Keya Tanna said the student legal services event her office planned was postponed to Feb. 11 because of logistical issues.

Agenda items:

  • The council unanimously approved a letter in support of a modified version of alternative five of the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project. Michael Griffin and Winston Li, co-directors of transportation equity and access for the Facilities Commission, gave speeches in support of the alternative prior to the vote.

  • The council unanimously approved a change to the guidelines of the community service fund.
  • The council approved a resolution in solidarity with the protests calling for regime change in Iran.
  • The council unanimously passed a resolution in support of the UC Student Association’s “Racial Justice Now” campaign. The project aims to promote racial justice, specifically for the Black community.
