Homecoming is one of the most anticipated events of the school year for many students.
The same can be said for athletes.
UCLA swim and dive (1-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) had an eventful weekend during its home debut, beating Iowa (1-3) on Friday, before sweeping a quad meet against Iowa, Utah (2-2) and UC Santa Barbara (1-1) on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins also hosted the Bruin Diving Invite across all three days at the same venue from Friday to Sunday.
The Bruins defeated the Hawkeyes 179-101 and won all but two of the 15 events during the Friday dual meet, securing UCLA’s first win tally of the season after previously falling to Arizona on Nov. 8 and coming to a draw with then-No. 18 Arizona State the day before. The 200 IM and 400 medley relay were the only two races UCLA dropped.
UCLA Athletics did not provide media availability for the team’s athletes or coach.
Such performances also came despite the team struggling with illness, which Jada Duncan grappled with throughout the weekend. Despite her ailment, the freshman won the 50 free with a 23.03. Duncan followed the Saturday victory with additional wins in the 50 fly and the 200 medley relay, and she took second in the 50 back to senior Fay Lustria by just over a second.
The Bruins won the 200 medley relay on both days of swimming competition. UCLA took first on Friday with a 1:40.93, beating out Iowa by over 3.5 seconds. Junior Sarah Bennetts, who also won the 100 breast with a 1:02.44, and sophomore Claudia Yovanovich participated in both races. Yovanovich also finished second in the 100 back, sweeping the podium alongside senior Rosie Murphy and freshman Erica Jaffe.
Applejean Gwinn added to the collection of freshmen successes, taking the top spots in the 800 free with an 8:11.77 and the 300 IM with a 3:13.73 on Friday. Gwinn notched first-place finishes in both events, and senior Ashley Kolessar joined her on the podium in the 800 free as the runner-up.

Murphy collected five individual victories throughout the weekend, following her wins in Friday’s 100 back, 100 butterfly and 200 breast with first-place wins in Saturday’s 150 back and 100 IM.
Her 100 back performance with wins in the 150 back and 100 IM. In the former, Murphy touched the wall at 29.15, narrowly outpacing Jaffe. In the latter, the Sacramento local bested second-place Olivia Swalley from Iowa and was the only Bruin who finished in the top seven of the race.
On the diving side, UCLA concluded the weekend with a platform victory from Eden Cheng, who captured both the preliminary with a 312.70 score and the final round with a 346.30 mark. Cheng had consistent performances throughout the invite, taking second in Friday’s 1m and reaching the finals in Saturday’s 3m competitions alongside junior Molly Brascia, who took sixth in prelims.
UCLA also took second to Hawai‘i in the team diving event with a 278.50 mark across six dives.
UCLA will continue its home stand through January, facing Stanford on Jan. 16 before facing California the next day.
