The new year is bringing a slew of new competition to Westwood.
UCLA swim and dive (0-1-1) will host the Bruin Diving Invite, a dual meet against Iowa (1-2) and a quad meet featuring the former in addition to UC Santa Barbara (1-1) and Utah (2-2) this upcoming weekend at Spieker Aquatics Center.
The Bruin Diving Invite will begin the weekend of competition Friday, featuring Idaho, Cal Baptist, Hawaiʻi, Iowa, Northern Arizona, San Diego State, UNLV, USC and Utah.
The invite will take place over the course of the weekend, with preliminary rounds followed by final rounds for each event across the three-day competition. The 1-meter competition will commence and conclude Friday, and the 3-meter competition will take place the following day, with Sunday being reserved for platform dives.
At the USC Diving Invite – the most recent major diving event for the Bruins – junior Molly Brascia took second place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, with a fourth-place finish on the final day on the platform. The Bruins were also able to secure a top-three placing through senior Eden Cheng’s second-place finish on the platform.
Two other Bruin divers who will compete at the upcoming invite are junior Laura Fisher and sophomore Virginia Tiberti, both of whom placed at the USC Diving Invite. The former placed seventh in both the 3-meter and platform events, and the latter placed sixth in the 1-meter.
At the same time as the Bruin Diving Invite, the swimming cohort will go head-to-head with Iowa on Friday before competing in Saturday’s quad meet featuring Utah and UC Santa Barbara. The dual meet against the Hawkeyes is the Bruins’ first conference matchup of the season, and the first time Spieker Aquatics Center will welcome a Big Ten opponent.
The team most recently competed in a quad meet at UC San Diego last weekend. In La Jolla, the Bruins defeated both UCSD and Tulane, but fell to No. 15 Wisconsin by 35 points.
During the competition, UCLA had multiple first-place finishes. Freshman Jada Duncan took first in the 100-yard fly, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, while also making the podium in the 400-yard medley relay.
Sophomore Anna Wetteland also had a winning finish in the 50-yard free and contributed to the team’s aforementioned second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
The competition-filled weekend will be the first time this season the Bruins host both diving and swimming events at Spieker Aquatic Center. Events commence at 2 p.m. on Friday.
