UCLA women’s soccer coach Margueritte Aozasa has departed the program for other opportunities, the university announced Monday morning.
“Leaving a place like UCLA is not easy, and it is especially difficult to say goodbye to the team, support staff and fellow coaches that make up this exceptional Bruin family,” said Aozasa in a written statement provided by the university. “These relationships go well beyond the soccer field, and I’m grateful to everyone for making this journey so memorable these last four years. I’ve had the privilege of coaching some of the most incredible women, and I will always be in their corner.”
Aozasa announced Tuesday morning that she will join the University of Texas staff as head coach with an Instagram statement. The Longhorns held a 4-12-1 record in 2025 and failed to clinch the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
Aozasa joined the Bruins in December 2021 and completed a historic run in her rookie season, leading the squad to its second-ever national championship. She was the first rookie coach and woman of color to accomplish such a feat.
That same year, she was awarded Pac-12 Coach of the Year and tied the school record for 22 wins in one season.
Aozasa led the squad to consistent results throughout her four-year tenure, compiling a 67-13-9 record and earning an NCAA tournament berth each season. She has secured two conference tournament championships – the Pac-12 in 2023 and the Big Ten in 2024.
“Margueritte was a transformative coach for this program during her time at UCLA,” said the Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond in a written statement provided by the university. “Her on-field success speaks for itself, with a championship title in each of her first three years, but her mentorship and wisdom have been just as impactful for so many of our student-athletes as well. We thank her for everything she has accomplished here and wish her and her family all the best.”
Aozasa has developed 20 Bruins currently playing professionally, including Lilly Reale, Ryan Campbell and Sofia Cook – all members of the 2025 NWSL championship squad NJ/NY Gotham FC. Reale also earned 2025 NWSL Rookie of the Year honors.
Aozasa was an assistant coach at Stanford from 2015-21, supporting the team to a pair of national championships in 2017 and 2019, as well as a College Cup appearance in 2018.
The former Bruin coach forged a collegiate athletic career of her own, playing for Santa Clara University from 2008-11 at both midfield and center back. She was team captain from 2010-11.
“We are grateful for all that Margueritte has given to UCLA,” said Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director Erin Adkins in a written statement provided by the university. “As we begin the search of our next head coach, we are committed to carrying forward the proud legacy of UCLA Women’s Soccer.”
Adkins will lead the search for the next head honcho, which begins immediately.
