USAC recap – Nov. 4

The Undergraduate Students Association Council made seven committee appointments and allocated over $100,000 to student groups at its Nov. 4 meeting.
USAC is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Meetings take place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. and are open to all students. The meetings are held in person at the Bruin Viewpoint Room and are livestreamed and published online. Students can access links to the meetings and agenda posted on the USAC website under the Documents tab or watch a livestream on the USAC Live! channel on YouTube.
Public comment:
- There was no public comment at the meeting.
Funding:
- The council allocated $13,143.67 from the Capital Contingency Fund to one USAC entity and 48 non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $12,475.72 from the Supplemental Fund for Service to five USAC entities and 12 non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $357.06 from the Student Wellness Commission Programming Fund to one non-USAC entity.
- The council allocated $4,188.13 from the Academic Success Referendum Fund to nine non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $777.78 from the Academic Affairs Commission Travel Grant Mini Fund to three non-USAC entities.
- The council allocated $500 from The Green Initiative Fund to one non-USAC entity.
- The council allocated $520 from the Community Service Transportation Fund to one non-USAC entity.
- The council allocated $75,382.11 from the Community Service Mini Fund to seven USAC entities and 28 non-USAC entities.
Appointments:
- The council appointed Tahnee Baragona, a first-year psychology student, to the John Wooden Board of Governors.
- The council appointed Vanessa Harris, a third-year public affairs student, to the Student Initiated Outreach Committee.
- The council appointed Yamaanibah Johnson, a fourth-year political science student, to the Campus Retention Committee.
- The council appointed Jiorden King, a fourth-year psychology student, to the Student Activity Center Board of Governors.
- The council appointed Awa Ouattara, a third-year international development studies and political science student, as the retention coordinator for the Campus Retention Committee.
- The council appointed Harrison Qiu, a third-year microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics student, to the Committee on LGBTQ Affairs.
- The council approved Nicholas Reese, a fourth-year political science student, as chair of the Oversight Committee.
Officer reports:
- President Diego Bollo said in his written report that he reviewed candidates for the SIOC and CRC and spoke with a CalMatters reporter about UCLA’s Department of Mathematics.
- Internal Vice President Tommy Contreras said his diversity, equity and inclusion committee held a successful Día de los Muertos event with the Latinx Success Center. He added that his office plans to host upcoming events, including a financial literacy night and career readiness workshop.
- External Vice President Sherry Zhou said her office plans to host a UC Board of Regents teach-in with General Representative Jayha Buhs Jackson on Nov. 10 in Math Sciences 5127.
- General Representative Talia Davood said in her written report that she onboarded a representative of the Baha’i faith – a religion that emphasizes the unity of humanity and all religions, according to Encyclopedia Britannica – to the unofficial interfaith coalition. She added that UCLA Panhellenic is no longer able to join the office’s self-defense workshop and said she is looking for other groups to collaborate with. Davood said in the report that she is finalizing a time for a graduate school guidance workshop.
- General Representative Jayha Buhs Jackson did not update her written report.
- General Representative Brett Berndt said he met with the joint-programming director for Bruin Game Day.
- Academic Affairs Commissioner Cristopher Espino said in his written report that he led a commission meeting on educational equity and initiatives to combat political polarization on college campuses.
- Campus Events Commissioner Daniel Leal did not update his written report.
- Community Service Commissioner Edison Chua said in his written report that SustainaBruin – an environmental sustainability fair – will be held Nov. 12.
- Cultural Affairs Commissioner Divine Trewick’s written report referenced “Word on Wednesday” – a biweekly open mic that hosted an “ICE OUT OF LA” event on Nov. 5 in the Bruin Reception Room.
- Facilities Commissioner Joy Huang said the Transportation Equity and Access committee will give out free bike lights and promote bike safety with UCLA transportation at Dickson Court Nov. 12. She added that she is also looking for possible locations for the Lily Shaw Disability Cultural Center and met with UCLA Transportation to discuss cuts to BruinAccess – an on-campus paratransit service. Huang also said her office is looking for more students to appoint to the Student Activity Center Board of Governors.
- Financial Supports Commissioner Nico Morrone did not update his written report.
- Student Wellness Commissioner Hannah Yip said in her written report that she attended the Basic Needs Committee meeting and the Student Health Advisory Committee meeting. She added her office plans to table with Trewick’s for an “ICE OUT OF LA” event Nov. 5 and a de-stressing event with dogs Nov. 12.
- Transfer Student Representative Hyerim Yoon said in her written report that she invited several Los Angeles community colleges to USAC’s Transfer Student Advocacy Day. She also said her office’s mindfulness yoga event will be Nov. 6.
- International Student Representative Keya Tanna did not update her written report.
