The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health temporarily shut down Hangry Moon’s Friday for a vermin infestation.

It is the second business, following Fat Sal’s, on the 900 block of Gayley Avenue to be closed by the department in the past week for vermin infestation. Fat Sal’s – which is directly next door to Hangry Moon’s – was shut down Wednesday, but has since reopened. 

Hangry Moon’s, according to the LA County Department of Public Health website, violated California Health and Safety Code Section 114259.1, which says establishments must be “kept free of vermin.” The site also said that Hangry Moon’s is a “high risk” establishment.

Both live and dead cockroaches were found in the restaurant, according to the inspection report.

Hangry Moon’s did not respond in time to a request for comment on the restaurant’s conditions. The LA County Department of Public Health referred the Daily Bruin to its website in response to a request for comment.

Angelina Hamilton, a third-year psychology student, said she does not plan on eating at Hangry Moon’s when the restaurant reopens. 

“If you’ve had previous precedent, then the likelihood of it happening again is still pretty high,” she said. 

Diya Ravi Shankar, a first-year molecular cell and developmental biology student, said she has seen vermin while eating in the general Westwood area. 

Shankar said she would rather have the report be made and fixed, rather than no report at all. 

“I’d rather they do that and fix it,” Shankar said.
