The Los Angeles Fire Department extinguished a fire on Roebling Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

A person started the fire around 9:30 p.m., pouring a liquid over mattresses, furniture and items. The fire began about six hours after UCLA football’s upset victory over Penn State at the Rose Bowl – the team’s first win of the season.

The fire came nine days after another fire on the street, which LAFD also extinguished. It was at least the third fire on the street since the beginning of the calendar year.

A speaker at 10975 Roebling Ave. played various songs with “fire” in the lyrics, beginning with “Fire Burning” by Sean Kingston, shortly before 9:20 p.m.

At least four dozen people watched and some began a derogatory chant toward Penn State.

UCPD arrived at Roebling Avenue and Landfair Avenue around 9:40 p.m., after which people began leaving the area near the fire. LAFD arrived at 9:40 p.m., and the fire appeared to be fully extinguished by 9:50 p.m.

People near the fire applauded as firefighters put out the flames. As UCPD officers stood near the smoking remains of what had been extinguished, the speaker played the song “Daddy Cop” by Zander Hawley.

A spokesperson for UCPD did not respond in time to a request for comment on the fire.

Fires have been occurring on Roebling Avenue for several years. While there appears to be no consistent pattern to the fires, they sometimes follow victories by UCLA Athletics.
