All-Nighters Made Easier: 24/7 UCLA Tutoring Service Now Available

Attend lectures and labs, show up for club meetings, participate in extracurriculars, study, balance having a social life, call mom, go to the gym, eat — does your schedule look like this, too?

It’s tough to find enough time to actually learn what’s going on in class. And while struggling through chemistry, physics, or calculus may seem like a rite of passage for UCLA premed and engineering students, it doesn’t have to be so overwhelming.

When CramBetter brought its 24/7 UCLA tutoring service to campus, students finally found somewhere to turn to for extra help that fit their schedule. By providing each student with a game plan for their UCLA STEM classes, CramBetter ensures that no one gets left behind.

“Our goal is to focus on what’s really important for exams and save students a lot of time and frustration,” said Steven Keys, co-founder of CramBetter. “We’re able to cover each week’s worth of lectures in about an hour.”

CramBetter offers weekly study guides and video lessons for each topic covered in UCLA classes, which is how students can review material. Then, CramBetter helps students test their understanding with practice exam questions that look like the kinds of problems that’ll show up on UCLA tests. If students get any questions wrong, they can watch detailed video solutions that explain exactly how to solve each practice exam question, step-by-step.

“It’s pretty common for students to feel confident going into Exam 1 and then be surprised by their test results,” Keys said. “That’s when we see a lot of people looking for help.”

Students who turned to CramBetter after doing poorly on their first test often experience a dramatic improvement in their grades. Keys said many students see their grades improve by a letter or two after using CramBetter, particularly when they start earlier in the quarter.

Services for some of the most difficult STEM classes are offered by CramBetter, including UCLA physics tutoring, along with support for both general and organic chemistry, and the entire calculus sequence — with Differential Equations likely to be added in the near future.

“Right now, we offer support for 11 UCLA classes, including physics, calculus, chemistry, and more,” said Keys.

Computer engineering major Samantha Redifer sought out Physics 1A tutoring at UCLA through CramBetter last year, noting, “CramBetter helps me understand the content more conceptually. The problems my physics professor assigns are tough, but after going through the relevant units on CramBetter and understanding the topics at their core, I’m able to tackle them with more confidence.”

While some schools offer their own forms of academic support, like department tutoring programs offered by UCLA, it doesn’t always fit students’ needs. Most on-campus tutoring is provided by fellow undergraduate students who did well in the class in a previous quarter, which can be helpful to clear up a homework question but isn’t the same as seeing a professional educator.

Every tutor at CramBetter has a master’s degree or higher in addition to at least eight years of teaching experience, which ensures that CramBetter tutors are not just subject matter experts but also educators who can communicate effectively.

“Studying with your peers is great, but when you come to CramBetter, you know you’re getting a true subject expert,” said Keys. “Our goal here is to make all those tough topics in class way easier to understand and apply.”
