Daily Bruin receives 4 awards at 67th Southern California Journalism Awards

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – The Daily Bruin received four awards Sunday at the 67th Southern California Journalism Awards. 

The awards ceremony was hosted at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel by the LA Press Club, an organization that “exists to support, promote, and defend quality journalism in Southern California,” according to its website. 

The Bruin was honored alongside the Daily Trojan and industry professionals including the LA Times’ Bill Plaschke and CNN’s Clarissa Ward. The Bruin won awards in all four categories that it was nominated for and Natalia Mochernak, the 2025-2026 campus politics editor, received the Tony Ross Scholarship.

The Bruin – led by 2024-2025 Editor-in-chief Lex Wang, 2024-2025 Managing editor Sanjana Chadive and 2024-2025 Digital managing editor Mia Tavares – placed second in the Best College News Website category.

Alicia Carhee, the 2024-2025 PRIME content editor, and Sam Mulick, the 2024-2025 features and student life editor, won Best Personality Profile in the Campus Personalities on Any Platform division for their piece, “Cooking up community: The UCLA student behind Poom Thai Cuisine.”

Victoria Munck, the 2024-2025 Arts editor, was awarded second place for her piece, “Emmys 2024: Alumnus Jerry Henry shares his experience working on the ‘The 1619 Project’ docuseries” in the Student division of the Best Arts Writing category.

Anna Dai-Liu, the 2023-2024 science and health editor, and Dylan Winward, the 2025-2026 editor in chief, won third place for their piece, “Pro-Israel counter-protesters attempt to storm encampment, sparking violence,” in the Campus Issues, Layoffs/strikes/protests division of the Best News Writing category.

  • Third place – Best News Writing, Campus Issues, Layoffs/strikes/protests – Print or Online, Student: Anna Dai-Liu and Dylan Winward, “Pro-Israel counter-protesters attempt to storm encampment, sparking violence” 

The Daily Bruin is UCLA’s premier student newspaper and one of the largest print news outlets by circulation in LA. Its staff has won numerous awards and has been recognized on local, state and national levels.
