North Westwood Neighborhood Council recap – June 4

The North Westwood Neighborhood Council heard updates from public officials in its final term meeting June 4.
The council, which represents Westwood to the Los Angeles City Council, meets on the first Wednesday of most months in UCLA’s Weyburn Commons. Meetings are open to the public and also held on Zoom. The council’s next meeting, which will see new members take office, is scheduled for July 9.
Comments by public officials:

LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said in a written statement that the Board of City Supervisors approved motions on addressing homelessness and accelerating the county’s Bicycle Master Plan.
- Janet Turner, US. Congressman Ted Lieu’s outreach deputy district director, said Lieu’s office is accepting applications for its youth advisory council. Turner added that Lieu supported a bill to recognize the achievements of the California education system and increase the amount of savings people on federal disability can collect. Turner also said Lieu authored a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson asking for his support in removing a cap on mortgage deductions. She added that Lieu wants to work toward expediting the visa process for Olympic athletes.
- Sherwin Shamoeil, a field representative for California Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, said all seven of Zbur’s bills in the state assembly had passed, including one intended to combat antisemitism in schools.

Samantha Gallegos, a representative for California State Senator Ben Allen, said 14 out of 21 of his current senate bills passed. This included a bill to provide tax credit incentives for film and TV production, a bill to increase wildfire preparedness and a bill to phase out perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also called “forever chemicals,” in CA.

Shin Black, a LA Fire Department Battalion Chief, said events to celebrate Fire Service Day were successful. He added that the first week of June was CPR awareness week.

Michael Russell, the executive director of the Westwood Village Improvement Association, said the Westwood Village Ambassadors program moved its office to the ground floor of Broxton Avenue Parking lot and that WVIA is following up on repairing broken streetlights in Westwood Village. He added that Westwood has several upcoming events, including a Salsa Dance Party on June 13 and Westwood Village Pride on June 28.

Carmen Zambrano, assistant director of UCLA Community and Local Government Relations, said UCLA is looking for sustainable move out volunteers and that commencement ceremonies will take place from June 13 to 15.

Erica Gatica Doughty, a representative from EmpowerLA – an organization that supports neighborhood councils across the city – said budget day is at City Hall on June 21 and that councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky and Mayor Karen Bass were scheduled to attend. Doughty added that the NWWNC has submitted more than 2,000 community impact statements voicing opinions on issues to the City Council, which is more than any other neighborhood council on the Westside.

Diego Bollo, the Undergraduate Students Association Council president, introduced himself to the board and said he hopes to collaborate with them in the future.

Stevem Sann, the program and events chair of Friends of the Westwood Branch Library, said the library’s anniversary celebration was a success. He added that the National Guard band was scheduled to play at the next library concert to celebrate July 4.

The council voted unanimously to approve two proposed budget plans, one for $25,000 and one for $32,000, to be amended based on the amount of funds the City Council approves next term.

The council voted to approve a CIS in support of city building code reforms that would allow for buildings to be constructed up to six stories with only one staircase. Kevin Crummy, Josh Trifunovic, Elizabeth Brady, Melissa Nessman and Jacob Lawson abstained from the vote.

The council voted to approve a CIS in support of automated bike lane parking enforcement. The vote passed with 11 yes votes and three no votes from Maikel Kohanhediud, Josh Trifunovic and Kevin Crummy.

The council approved moving the next NWWNC meeting to July 9 due to concerns about attendance during the week of July 4.

The council congratulated graduating UCLA students and other council members who finished their term on the NWWNC.
