The sole candidate running for Undergraduate Students Association Council transfer student representative said she hopes to implement more inclusive policies for transfer students, students with disabilities and students with dependents during a Thursday debate.
The USA Elections Board and the Daily Bruin co-hosted a series of debates between candidates in the upcoming USAC election Wednesday and Thursday. Hyerim Yoon, a third-year English and history student, is running unopposed for the position of transfer student representative.
Yoon, who is a transfer student, said they hope to create a more inclusive and engaging community for non-traditional students at UCLA. Yoon added that she hopes to preserve the pipeline between California community colleges and the UC.

“I am running to serve as your next USAC transfer student representative with a key focus on the transfer community,” Yoon said. “I will accomplish this through four of my platforms, the first of which is transfer opportunities to ensure that transfers are present in every leadership decision and distributing space at UCLA.”
Additionally, Yoon said she wants to create resources that center the needs of transfer students, adding that they have a shorter time to accomplish their UCLA goals.
“We make up such a big portion of UCLA’s population, and, unfortunately, a lot of our resources on campus are made with traditional four-year students in mind,” Yoon said.
Yoon closed by saying their non-traditional student journey makes them uniquely suited to serve transfer students.
“I started college at 16, so being up here and giving this speech is surreal and its own reward,” Yoon said.
Students can vote in the election on MyUCLA from 8 a.m. May 9 until noon May 16.
