ASUCLA Board of Directors recap – March 15

The ASUCLA Board of Directors held its ninth meeting of the 2024-2025 term March 15, approving the purchase of a $175,000 air conditioning unit for Lu Valle Commons.
The board, composed of a student majority, has financial oversight over ASUCLA entities, including the Undergraduate Students Association Council, the Graduate Student Association and the ASUCLA Communications Board – which oversees UCLA Student Media. ASUCLA also has responsibility for the UCLA Store, on-campus restaurants and some UCLA trademarks. Board meetings are open to the public and normally held in Kerckhoff Hall.
Public comment:
- There was no public comment at the meeting.
BOD alumnus remarks:
- Former Finance Committee Chair Julia Terrano said her time on the BOD set her up for success after graduation in her current position as an account manager at Insight Global.
Executive director/CEO remarks:
- ASUCLA Executive Director and CEO Pouria Abbassi said the board attended a listening session with Chancellor Julio Frenk.
Committee Reports:
- Executive Committee Chair Heeya Firdaus said the committee met March 11 to discuss negotiations relating to UCPath system service fees.
- Personnel Committee Chair Merhawi Tesfai said the committee met March 10 to discuss the Pulse survey report, a work environment survey.
Executive director’s report:
- Abbassi said Student Government Services was preparing to present at a national conference on student leadership and training programs. He added that the United States Department of Agriculture accepted ASUCLA’s request to allow the Hill Top Shop to accept CalFresh. Abbassi said ASUCLA, in collaboration with the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center, held a blood drive March 10 to 14.
Action/discussion items:
- The board approved a capital expenditure of $175,000 for the installation of an air conditioning system at Lu Valle Commons.
Task team presentation:
- Graduate Representative Javier Rodriguez gave a presentation on the board’s Student Fee Task Team. He said the committee created a subcommittee to allow law students to engage with both the Undergraduate Students Association Council and Graduate Student Association to address referendum language, student wages and infrastructure needs.
