The Bruins’ nine-game win streak may have come to an end Sunday, but their four-bout tear in midweek affairs persists.
And the team will have a chance to extend the latter Tuesday.
After winning its eighth consecutive weekend series, No. 10 UCLA baseball (25-6, 10-2 Big Ten) rose in D1Baseball’s top 25 for the third consecutive week Monday, just ahead of its bout with Long Beach State (12-17, 6-9 Big West) at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Bruins are 6-1 in midweeks this season, outscoring opponents 78-35.
Redshirt junior left-hander Ian May will make his second straight Tuesday start and his sixth start of the year, likely because of a shorthanded Bruin pitching staff.
Junior right-hander Cody Delvecchio and sophomore right-hander Luke Rodriguez are academically ineligible, said coach John Savage. Delvecchio made seven starts as UCLA’s Friday night starter, posting a 5.44 FIP, but has since been replaced by freshman right-hander Wylan Moss, who started the team’s first five Tuesday games.
Rodriguez, on the other hand, served as a swing man his freshman year but has primarily appeared out of the bullpen this season – starting just one game – posting a 2.11 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.
May only pitched two innings in his Tuesday start against Pepperdine, but he may be asked for more after Sunday’s 14-inning affair exhausted nine UCLA arms.

On the other side, Long Beach State wrapped up an away series against Hawaiʻi on Sunday, taking two of three, and won its series against UC Santa Barbara the weekend prior.
Right-hander Alex Ramos, who has a 6.01 FIP, will make his first start for the Dirtbags on Tuesday. However, Ramos’ longest outing of the season is just 2.2 innings, suggesting he may only be an opener.
Third baseman Dylan Lina leads the Dirtbags with a .978 OPS but hasn’t appeared since March 28. Right fielder Kyle Ashworth is right behind Lina with a .943 OPS, slashing .320/.473/.470, and shortstop Armando Briseno is just below the .900 OPS mark, slashing .321/.416/.481.
UCLA’s sophomore shortstop Roch Cholowsky celebrated his 20th birthday Monday. After going 7-for-13 with three doubles over the weekend, Cholowsky’s 1.240 OPS is fourth in the Big Ten, while his .532 OBP leads the conference.

In the field, the Bruins boast a .980 fielding percentage, the third-best mark in the Big Ten and a significant jump from the .965 mark they posted last season.
“That’s all the difference between good teams and great teams,” said redshirt sophomore left-hander Will Goldberg, who included back-to-back ground balls to escape a bases-loaded jam unscathed Sunday. “It does give you a lot of confidence on the mound with those guys behind you.”
After suffering just their sixth loss of the season, the Big Ten table-topper Bruins have the opportunity to bounce back ahead of their return to conference play Friday.
“There’s a lot of chances to win the game, a lot of opportunities to execute, and we just didn’t. That’s unfortunate, but it’s fine,” said sophomore first baseman Mulivai Levu. “We’ll bounce back and be back to ourselves.”
