After a hard-fought victory against the Badgers the day prior, the Bruins kept their second match of the weekend short and sweet.

It took No. 24 UCLA women’s tennis (10-7, 5-3 Big Ten) two hours to sweep Minnesota (9-13, 1-8) Sunday morning – an hour shorter than its three hour Saturday battle with No. 19 Wisconsin – in its second consecutive Big Ten bout at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Contrary to what the final score might indicate, the battle for the doubles point was a competitive affair.

“Gosh, in doubles they really tested us,” said coach Stella Sampras Webster. “I don’t know if we were coming in too passive or they were just really being aggressive.”

With their matchup against Aiva Schmitz and Arina Valitova knotted at three games apiece, sophomore Ahmani Guichard and junior Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer rattled off three straight to win the set 6-3.

No. 3 freshmen Olivia Center and Kate Fakih followed with a 6-4 victory against Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto to collect the doubles point, leaving No. 16 seniors Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle’s set against Anali Kocevar and Mia Liepert unfinished 5-4.

Any hope of a Golden Gopher comeback was quickly put to rest – No. 22 Lutkemeyer, No. 44 Fakih, Guichard and sophomore Bianca Fernandez all dished out bagels in their first sets.

“They (the Gophers) have so many weapons – even outdoors,” Sampras Webster said. “So I think our team did a great job in singles coming out strong, getting up on them really early and setting the tone.”

No. 92 Wagle and Center almost joined the rout, each surrendering one game in their breadstick first set wins.

After defeating Wisconsin’s No. 5 Maria Sholokhova Saturday, Lutkemeyer continued her reign on court one, besting Schmitz, who struggled to catch a break – or a hold for that matter – to secure the first singles win 6-0, 6-1.

It was Fernandez, in just her fifth singles appearance of the dual-match season and first since March 14, who put UCLA on the brink of victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Deniz Turan.

“My goal was just to play like I do in practice,” Fernandez said. “I tend to kind of over complicate sometimes. I just tried my best to stay loose, relaxed and think of anything other than tennis.”

Fakih sealed the deal for the Bruins for the second straight day with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Pinto.

No. 103 Hance, who has most recently been the Bruins go-to on court two, was missing from the singles lineup, however. Sampras Webster said Hance wasn’t feeling 100%, opening the door for Fernandez to play on court six.

“I just figured just take her out so she can get ready for next week,” Sampras Webster said. “Just take care of her body.”

Following three straight split weekends, the Bruins’ wins over the Badgers and Golden Gophers put them two games above .500 in conference play for the first time all season.

“We had a good little weekend at home, and we played really well,” Guichard said. “Just taking that and a great mentality into the next couple weeks, and we’ll be good.”

UCLA will head East next weekend to continue its Big Ten slate. But for now, the team has one request.

“I need a nap,” Fernandez said.
