The Bruins will head on their final cross-country road trip of the season riding on their second win of the quickly ending regular season.
No. 10 UCLA men’s golf will tee off Sunday at the Calusa Cup hosted by the University of Iowa in Naples, Florida. Last time out, the Bruins shot 11-under 829 to win The Goodwin by nine strokes against the rest of the 30-team field.
“None of us have ever been to Calusa Pines,” said coach Armen Kirakossian. “We’ve heard that the golf course is pretty challenging. If you look historically, the winning score for the team is not very low.”
Junior Kyle An, who played a big role in UCLA’s win at The Goodwin, placing 12th individually, said it would be important to adapt on an unfamiliar course.
“Whatever gets thrown at us, you just have to adjust,” An said. “So we look forward to the challenge and just having fun.”
Weather conditions could present a challenge for the Bruins in Florida. The forecast for the first two days of play predicts temperatures in the high 80s, along with elevated humidity levels.
“We’re not used to humidity, so making sure the guys can stay hydrated and they’re drinking enough fluids, that’s something we’ve already talked about with the guys,” Kirakossian said.
Additionally, weather forecasts suggest a high chance of thunderstorms Tuesday, the final day of the tournament, which means the possibility of a compressed tournament format similar to the Bruins’ last experience in Florida at the Watersound Invitational in February.
The field includes No. 4 LSU, No. 8 Virginia and No. 12 Florida as the ranked teams alongside UCLA. Fellow Big Ten competitors Purdue and Iowa will also join the squad in Naples.
“It was nice to win, but we’re on to the next,” An said. “Preparing how we always do and seeing where that gets us.”

Rowing

Sunday brings Senior Day festivities and an opportunity for the Bruins to improve their season record.
UCLA rowing (0-1) will face the University of San Diego in Marina del Rey as part of its final competition at home during the regular season.
The matchup comes just two weeks ahead of the Bruins’ inaugural showing at the Big Ten Invitational tournament in Sarasota, Florida.
Despite its second-to-last finish in last year’s Pac-12 tournament, the team has found more success in the water this season, with UCLA’s Varsity 4+ speeding past three top-ranked teams in No. 20 Notre Dame, No. 23 USC and No. 24 Washington State in the San Diego Crew Classic last weekend.
While all seven of the Bruins’ boats made the Grand Finals at the San Diego Crew Classic, only three of the Toreros’ six boats earned top-three finishes in their respective races.
Following Sunday’s races, the team’s seniors will be celebrated with ceremonies and festivities with their fellow teammates and family members to mark the team’s final home regatta.
