UCPD arrested a registered sex offender near Covel Commons around 1 p.m. Friday for unlawfully entering campus.

The person is on probation and had a prior court order barring him from campus, said Jeffrey Chobanian, UCPD’s acting captain of the administrative bureau, in an emailed statement. The suspect is a 42-year-old man and has been arrested for several prior misdemeanors, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Locator website.

The suspect was also arrested for prior incidents at UCLA, including a December indecent exposure in Kerckhoff Coffeehouse. He is registered with the Santa Monica Police Department as a sex offender.

Police arrested the suspect after receiving a call, Chobanian said in the statement. He added that UCPD used multiple systems to confirm that the suspect is not allowed on campus.

“The police department does not maintain a single master stay-away list,” he said in the statement. “Instead, we use multiple systems to check if an individual has any legal restrictions preventing them from being on campus.”

Chobanian also said in the statement that the incident was unrelated to a Friday evening traffic collision outside the De Neve Holly residential building. People requiring medical attention in relation to the traffic collision received treatment and the accident is currently classified as noncriminal, he added.
