This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
UCLA Housing notified Hedrick Summit residents of a potential gas leak at 7:44 p.m. Sunday.
According to an email from Saul Ramirez Jr. – the Housing Operations and Safety Office front desk supervisor –, the Southern California Gas Company had advised management to close the building’s laundry room out of caution. The Daily Bruin was unable to confirm the presence of a gas leak.
A SoCal Gas Company spokesperson did not respond in time to requests for comment.
The laundry room closed at 9 p.m. tonight and will remain closed indefinitely, according to both the email and a sign placed near the Hedrick Summit laundry room door. Ramirez said in the email that residents should avoid starting new loads of laundry and should use the Hedrick Hall laundry room for the duration of the closure.
A UCLA spokesperson said in a 9:02 p.m. text message that UCLA Fire Chief Ricardo Barboza had not heard anything about the leak. However, the spokesperson later edited the message and said he was still waiting to get information about the event. The Daily Bruin was unable to confirm whether UCLA Fire was aware of or responding to the incident.
The spokesperson later said in a 10:14 p.m. emailed statement that the building was safe.
“SoCal Gas conducted an inspection inside the Hedrick Summit laundry room and determined it is safe to keep the gas on and there is no threat to the public,” the spokesperson said. “They will return to campus tomorrow to conduct a follow-up inspection.”
