Coach Alicia Um Holmes expected to have nine players on her roster for the spring season.

But after seniors Zoe Antoinette Campos and Caroline Canales departed the program following their success in the LPGA Tour’s Q-Series, the squad was trimmed to just seven.

Returning to action for its second event of the spring season, seemingly shorthanded UCLA women’s golf will compete in the Bruin Wave Invitational at Valencia Country Club in Santa Clarita, California, beginning Monday.

“Campos and Canales were stalwarts of our team,” Um Holmes said. “They’ve been here since they were freshmen and were big contributors, so now we’re missing two of our main players.”

Monday’s starting five will be freshman Francesca Fiorellini, senior Natalie Vo, junior Meghan Royal, freshman Angela Liu and sophomore Jennifer Seo. Freshman Maye Huang and senior Tiffany Le will also compete as individuals.

“We have a great team,” Um Holmes said. “We have a few seniors left, but the younger ones are the majority now. So we have lots of potential, but we need to find more consistency moving forward.”

The Bruin Wave Invitational – cohosted by UCLA and Pepperdine – was held annually from 2010 to 2021, with notable winners including Danielle Kang, Linn Grant and former Bruin Lilia Vu. This year marks the event’s return and the first time it will be played at Valencia Country Club.

“I’m super excited to reboot this tournament,” Um Holmes said. “We’ve had a long history of great champions … and I’m happy to be working with Pepperdine University again to bring a good event to college golf.”

At 6,355 yards, the par-72 course is one of the longest tests the team will face this season.

The track – which hosted the 1998 PGA Northern Trust Open – underwent renovations in 2022 that focused on tree removals, bunker drainage and regrassing.

“The course has been in really great shape,” Vo said. “The main things we need to focus on out there are our approach shots and the green speeds.”

When the Palisades Fire began to threaten areas near UCLA, the team was temporarily moved to a Santa Clarita hotel, with practices held at Valencia Country Club and the Oaks Club in Valencia.

“We’ve been trying to play at Valencia any chance we get,” Um Holmes said. “Hopefully we get a little home course advantage.”

UCLA’s roster is headlined by freshman standout Fiorellini from Rome, Italy. The No. 20 amateur in the world recently received her second consecutive invitation to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Fiorellini is averaging a score of 73.2 this season and has posted two under-par rounds in her first four collegiate competitions.

Vo, who has averaged a score of 74.6 through six total events between the fall and spring, will fill in the Bruins’ No. 2 spot.

The lone senior in UCLA’s starting lineup has played a team-high 16 tournament rounds this season – including four under-par finishes. Vo’s best performance of the 2024-2025 campaign was a tie for fifth at the East Lake Cup on Oct. 30.

The Bruins will tee off Monday at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude the three-round tournament Tuesday afternoon.
