The Undergraduate Students Association Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Joy Huang as its next Facilities commissioner.

Huang, a third-year environmental science student, will succeed former Facilities Commissioner Alexandra Paul, who resigned in January. Huang will be the fourth person to serve as Facilities commissioner in under 14 months after the 2023-2024 commissioner, Evan Curran, also resigned in the middle of the academic year.

Huang declined the Daily Bruin’s request for an interview about her appointment.

The Facilities Commission is responsible for advocating for the sustainability and accessibility of UCLA facilities, according to its student organization page. The office’s commissioner also appoints four members to the committee of The Green Initiative Fund, a funding body which was allocated over $330,000 for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

According to the USA Bylaws, when a mid-year vacancy occurs on the council – such as in the case of Paul’s resignation – the council’s president nominates someone to fill the position after an open application process. The nominee is then reviewed by the Appointments Review Committee and later voted on by the council.

Huang was previously the Facilities Commission’s chief of staff for sustainability. She told the council during its meeting that as the incoming Facilities Commissioner, she hopes to increase collaboration with the Disabled Student Union and improve the quality of BruinAccess vans.

During the meeting, Internal Vice President Josh Garland said the Appointments Review Committee unanimously recommended Huang to be appointed to the position.

“ARC has no doubt that Joy will make a successful commissioner,” he said.

Huang said in a written statement that she is excited to become the Facilities commissioner.

“My priority is to advocate for a more sustainable, inclusive, and accessible campus for our diverse student body,” Huang said in the statement.
