UCPD have arrested two people since Friday near campus for firearm offenses.
Police arrested one person across the street from Gayley Heights on Le Conte Avenue on Saturday. They also detained – and subsequently arrested – an armed person Monday morning at the intersection of Charles E. Young Drive West and Strathmore Drive, said Jeffrey Chobanian, UCPD’s acting captain of the administrative bureau in an emailed statement.
Neither of the two people arrested were affiliated with UCLA, according to a post on UCPD’s Instagram account.
Photos released by UCPD on X show one seized pistol from the arrests. The suspect arrested across from Gayley Heights faces a misdemeanor charge, Chobanian added in the statement.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Locator website, the suspect arrested on Charles E. Young Drive West and Strathmore Drive was a 30-year-old man. He is charged with a felony, with bail set at $135,000, according to the LASD website.
The suspect was arrested after being detained by officers during a scooter theft investigation, according to a UCPD post on X.
UCPD declined to comment on how these firearms were obtained or the specific firearm-related offenses the suspects were charged with. UCLA has a firearm-free campus with a zero-tolerance policy for weapons possession, Chobanian said in the statement.
“Only police officers or designated security personnel may carry firearms on the UCLA campus without explicit permission from the Chief of Police,” Chobanian said in the statement. “If someone becomes aware of an illegal firearm, they must report it immediately to UCPD.”
