UCPD arrested two people in connection with the theft of mail from off-campus buildings Friday.

The crime was reported around 4:30 a.m. Friday. Officers made contact with the suspects at the intersection of Midvale and Levering Avenue, according to an emailed statement from Jeffrey Chobanian, UCPD’s Acting Captain of the Administrative Bureau.

Officers recovered pepper spray and what they suspected to be methamphetamine from the suspects, along with multiple objects suspected to be burglary tools – including a hammer, crowbars, pliers, screwdrivers and keys – Chobanian said in the statement.  Mail had been stolen from University Apartments North among other buildings, he added

The suspects were brought to Los Angeles County jail and face charges of burglary, mail theft, identity theft, misappropriation of lost property, possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of burglary tools and possession of tear gas. One suspect is a previously convicted felon, according to a post from UCPD on social media platform X.

UCPD detectives are investigating possible connections between the suspects and a series of crimes, Chobanian said in the statement. However the investigation is still in its early stages and “no official investigative statements can be made at this time.”

To help prevent mail theft, community members should collect their mail daily, secure checks and documents, assign others to hold their mail while traveling, drop-off mail and packages in secure locations and report suspicious activity, Chobanian said. People who experience mail or identity theft should contact the UCLA Police Department, he added.
